Jamaican Mango & Lime for locs and twists

A range built around locs, braids and twists

Jamaican Mango & Lime is one of the few lines aimed squarely at locked and braided hair rather than at loose curls. The UK range here covers four Jamaican Black Castor Oil blends, a set of locking gels in 6 oz and 16 oz, braid gels and mousses, the No More Itch Gro Sprays, and takedown and refresh products for the end of a style.

That makes it a practical line for anyone starting locs, maintaining them, or living in box braids and cornrows for weeks at a time. It is less useful if you are chasing a soft wash and go finish.

Choosing a castor oil blend

All four Jamaican Black Castor Oil versions share the same thick base and differ by what is added. Coconut is the mildest and the easiest on a sensitive scalp. Peppermint and Tea Tree give a cooling tingle that many people like on a scalp that has been under braids. Exotic Mongongo is the lightest feeling of the four and comes with a cotton tee.

A little goes a long way. Part the hair, apply to the scalp rather than the length, and massage it in with your fingertips instead of your nails.

Locking gels, braid gels and when to use which

The Resistant Formula Locking Gel is the firmest option and holds a fresh retwist through a wash. Lock Gro and the standard Locking Gel are softer and better for daily palm rolling. Cool Scalp Braid, Twist & Loc Gel is the one to reach for if regular gels leave your scalp feeling tight, and it comes in both 6 oz and 16 oz.

For braiding, the Extra Hold & Easy Braid Jel grips the hair while you plait and the Braiding & Setting Mousse gives a lighter set for flat twists and rod sets. Blax Black Wax is the darker wax for blending grey at the roots of locs.

Living with braids through a British year

Summer humidity of 75 to 90% swells braids and lifts frizz along the parts, which is where the 6-in-1 Soothes & Revives Braid Refresher earns its place. The Foams & Refresh Dry Wash cleans between full washes without soaking a style you want to keep another fortnight.

Winter is the drier problem. Indoor heating around 30% humidity leaves locs brittle and the scalp uncomfortable, so a lighter hand with gel and more oil at the roots works better. Hard water in London and the south east builds up inside locs faster than most people expect, which is what the Tingle Shampoo and a monthly clarifying wash are for.

Taking a style down

Quick & Easy Braid Takedown loosens the grip of old gel so braids come apart without ripping through matted new growth at the roots. Work it in section by section, wait a few minutes, then unravel from the ends upward. Rushing takedown is where most people lose the length they spent two months protecting.

Questions

Jamaican Mango & Lime questions, answered

Which Jamaican Black Castor Oil should I pick?
Coconut if your scalp is easily irritated, Peppermint or Tea Tree if you like a cooling feel under braids, and Exotic Mongongo if you find the others too heavy. All four use the same thick castor base and differ mainly by the added oil.
Is this range only for locs?
No, though locs and braids are the focus. The shampoos, conditioners and castor oils suit any coily or curly hair. The locking gels and Shine-A-Loc are specific to locs and will feel far too firm on loose curls.
What does the No More Itch Gro Spray do?
It is a leave in spray for the scalp between washes, used mostly by people in braids or locs. The mentholated version gives a strong cooling feel; the pea sprout and menthol version is milder. Spray on the parts, not the length.
Will the locking gel flake?
Not if you use a thin layer on damp hair and let it dry fully. Flaking almost always comes from layering fresh gel over old product. Wash properly every two to three weeks with the Tingle Shampoo to clear the build up.
How do I refresh braids without washing them?
The Foams & Refresh Dry Wash lifts oil and residue without soaking the style, and the 6-in-1 Braid Refresher softens the length and calms frizz along the parts. Between them you can push a style another week or two.
Is the Blax Black Wax a dye?
No, it is a black wax that coats the hair and blends grey at the roots of locs while it holds a retwist. It sits on the surface and washes out gradually rather than depositing colour inside the strand.
What is the difference between Lock Gro and the Resistant Formula gel?
Lock Gro is softer and suits daily palm rolling and touch ups. The Resistant Formula Locking Gel is the firmest of the three and holds a fresh retwist through a wash, which makes it better for new or loose locs.
Can I use these products on my child’s hair?
The oils, shampoo and conditioner are fine. Keep the mentholated sprays away from young children, as the tingle is strong, and go lightly with the firm locking gels on a soft scalp.
Does the Tingle Shampoo strip locs?
It cleanses more deeply than a co wash, which is the point. Use it every two to three weeks rather than weekly, and follow with the Black Castor Oil conditioner so the length is not left squeaky and stiff.
How do I stop breakage during takedown?
Use the Quick & Easy Braid Takedown, work in small sections, and unravel from the ends toward the root. Never dry rip a matted braid. Detangle each section with conditioner before you move on to the next.
Is Shine-A-Loc a spray or an oil?
It is an oil serum for locs, used sparingly on dry locs to bring shine back after a retwist. Use a few drops rubbed between the palms and smoothed over the surface, otherwise locs go greasy and pick up lint.
