About curl gels for hold UK

The gel is the final styler in most wet-styling routines — it locks in the curl pattern, smooths the cuticle, and creates a cast that protects definition while drying. Once fully dry, the cast is scrunched out to reveal soft, defined, frizz-free curls. This collection brings together every curl gel Zenvy stocks, sorted by hold strength and curl type.

The role of curl gel

Gel is the hold layer. While cream provides definition + softness, gel provides the polymer film that locks the curl shape until you scrunch out the cast. The gel cast (the slightly crunchy dry feeling) is desirable — it's the protective film keeping the cuticle smooth and the curl pattern locked. Scrunching the cast out with a few drops of oil reveals soft, defined curls underneath.

Modern curl gels use flexible-hold polymers (PVP, polyurethane resins, Polyquaternium series) that flex with movement rather than the rigid hold of old-school hairspray gels. The result: defined curls that don't feel like a helmet.

Three gel hold strengths

Light hold (2A-3A): Curlsmith Hydro Style Flexi Jelly, Bounce Curl Ceramide Jelly, Innersense I Create Definition. Lightest hold; cast scrunches out easily; soft finish. For looser patterns or daily wear.

Medium hold (3A-3C): Innersense I Create Hold, TréLuxe Hi! Definition Curl Enhancer Gel, Bounce Curl Light Hold Creme Gel. Mid-range hold; lasts 2-3 days. The most-used hold strength for everyday.

Strong hold (3C-4C): UFD Curly Magic Curl Stimulator, Camille Rose Curl Maker, The Doux 808 Base Gel, Curlsmith Fragrance Free Strong Hold Gel. Strongest hold; lasts 3-5 days; survives humidity. For tight curl patterns or special occasions.

How to use curl gel

Apply on soaking-wet hair after leave-in and curl cream. Smoosh and scrunch upward to encourage clump formation. Plop with microfibre, then air-dry or diffuse on low. Once 100% dry, scrunch out the cast — rub 2-3 drops of light oil between palms, scrunch upward. The cast breaks, curls soften, definition remains.

Dosing: more than feels right initially. The cast won't form properly with too little gel. Start with a golf-ball-sized amount for shoulder-length type 3 hair, scale up for thicker/longer hair.

All gels in this collection are sulphate-free, silicone-free, curl-specialist. Free UK delivery over £25.

Gel hold strength explained

Light hold: gel-cream hybrids, mousses. Examples: Bounce Curl Light Creme Gel, The Doux Mousse Def Jam. Best for type 2A-2B or anyone wanting soft curls. Medium hold: standard curl gels. Examples: Curl Keeper Original, UFD Curl Activator Gel. Best for type 2C-3B. Strong hold: defined-curl gels. Examples: Bounce Curl Hair Spray, Ecoslay Orange Marmalade. Best for type 3C-4.

The cast (crunchy feel) breaks when you scrunch with hands after the hair is fully dry. Soft, defined curls underneath. If you don't scrunch out the cast, the hair stays crunchy.

Application technique

Soaking wet hair, after leave-in and cream. Rake gel through with fingers from roots to ends. Scrunch upward to encourage curl formation. Apply more gel to crown for volume control. Don't disturb until dry. Scrunch-out-the-crunch when 95%+ dry.

Curl gel FAQs

Will curl gel leave my hair crunchy?
Initially yes — that's the cast, which is desirable for hold. Once 100% dry, scrunch out the cast (rub a bit of oil between palms and scrunch upward) and the underlying curls will be soft and defined.
Best curl gel for humidity?
Polymer-rich gels resist humidity best — Innersense I Create Hold, UFD Curly Magic, Eco Style Olive Oil, La Looks Sport Gel. Flax-based gels (Ecoslay Orange Marmalade) are softer but more humidity-vulnerable.
Should I use gel under or over curl cream?
Over — apply leave-in first, curl cream second, gel last. Each layer locks the previous one in. Gel under cream defeats the cuticle-smoothing purpose.
How much gel should I use?
More than feels right initially. The cast won't form properly with too little gel. Start with a golf-ball-sized amount for shoulder-length type 3 hair, scale up for thicker/longer hair.
Best UK gel for first-timers?
Bounce Curl Light Hold Creme Gel (£15) — medium hold, soft finish, works across type 2C-3C. Universal starter gel for everyday wear.
Best UK gel for type 4 hair?
UFD Curly Magic Curl Stimulator (strong hold, humectant-rich), The Doux 808 Base Gel (strong hold for protective styling), Camille Rose Curl Maker (defined hold + slip).
Best UK gel for fine 2A-2B hair?
Curlsmith Hydro Style Flexi Jelly — lightweight gel-jelly hybrid. Doesn't weigh down fine waves but still adds definition + light hold.
Will gel dry my hair out?
Modern curl gels include emollients and humectants — designed not to dry. Older drugstore gels with high alcohol content can dry hair. Look for water + flexible-hold polymer + emollients as core ingredient list.
Can I use gel on dry hair?
For touch-ups, yes — small amount mixed with water in palm. Don't apply gel directly to dry hair without water — creates flakes and residue.
Best UK gel for protein-sensitive hair?
Curl Keeper Gel (explicitly protein-free), Eco Style Olive Oil Gel, Camille Rose Curl Maker (low-protein). Avoid gels with hydrolysed wheat, soy, or rice protein if sensitive.
How do I know if my gel has enough hold?
Apply, plop, dry fully. The cast should be uniform across hair (not patchy). If the cast scrunches out easily and curl pattern remains defined, hold is sufficient. If hair drops out by lunch, increase dose or switch to stronger gel.
Best UK strong-hold gel under £20?
The Doux 808 Base Gel (£15) for type 3C-4C strong hold. UFD Curly Magic Curl Stimulator (£18) for cult-favourite strong-hold definition.
Why is my gel flaking?
Two causes. (1) Too much product applied to hair that's not soaking-wet. Fix: apply to soaking-wet hair, not damp. (2) Build-up from previous gels. Fix: clarify with sulphate or chelating shampoo to reset.
Best UK curl gel under £20?
Bounce Curl Light Creme Gel (£17), Curl Keeper Original (£20), Cantu Coconut Curling Cream Gel (£8). All work for type 2-3.
Why does my gel flake?
Either applied to too-dry hair, or product build-up. Apply only to soaking-wet hair. Clarify monthly to prevent build-up. Avoid drying alcohols (denatured alcohol, SD alcohol).
Best UK curl gel for type 4?
Eco Style Olive Oil Gel (£3, cult favourite), UFD Curl Activator Gel (£25), Ecoslay Orange Marmalade Curl Jam (£18). All strong-hold, type 4-friendly.
Will gel make my hair crunchy permanently?
No — scrunch out the cast when hair is fully dry. Underneath: soft, defined curls. Crunch is just the surface gel barrier.
Should I apply gel before or after cream?
After. Cream is the moisture layer; gel is the hold layer. Cream first = moisture seals into the strand. Gel last = hold seals the cream in.
