It is vitamin enriched and conditions the scalp directly, which matters most in the early stages when the roots are still forming and the hair underneath is being handled a lot. Applied down each part, it adds slip and keeps the scalp from going tight and dry between retwists. On established locs the same routine keeps the roots comfortable under all that tension.
This is the 16 oz tub, which is the size you want if you are maintaining a full head regularly or working on more than one person. For your own hair alone, the smaller jar will last a good while.
