Blue Magic for sealing and scalp conditioning

What Blue Magic is

Blue Magic sells hair conditioners and dressings in tubs, and it has been doing it the same way for decades. There is no serum, no cocktail of actives and no complicated system. You scoop a fingertip out of a jar, warm it between your palms and put it on your hair. For a lot of households it is the product that lived in the bathroom cupboard permanently, and the price has stayed sensible while everything around it got fancier.

The range splits cleanly into three groups: the 14 oz leave-in styling conditioners, the 12 oz scalp and hair dressings, and a couple of wash day products. Knowing which group you are in matters more than which flavour you pick.

The leave-in styling conditioners

These come in 14 oz tubs and are the more modern half of the line. Argan Oil Herbal Complex, Argan Oil Mango & Lime and Argan Oil Vitamin E all lean towards moisture and shine. Tea Tree Oil Leave-In Styling Conditioner is the lighter, fresher option for a scalp that feels congested. Olive Oil Leave-In Styling Conditioner is the general purpose one, and Carrot Oil Leave In Styling Conditioner is a long-standing favourite on relaxed hair.

Use them on damp hair after washing, or on lightly misted hair between washes. They give slip for detangling and a soft hold that suits roller sets, wraps and twist outs. They are creamier than a modern water based leave-in, so start with less than you think you need.

The dressings and grease tubs

The 12 oz jars are the traditional side. Blue Magic Hair Food, Bergamot Hair & Scalp Conditioner, Originals Castor Oil Hair & Scalp Conditioner, Shea Butter Hair Conditioner and Coconut Oil Hair Conditioner all belong here, along with the plain Petroleum Jelly for hairlines, edges and dry patches. Conditioner Hair Dress is the classic all-rounder of the group.

These are sealants. They do not add water to the hair, they slow water leaving it, so they go on over a damp head or over a moisturising lotion rather than onto bone dry strands. Applied that way they keep braids from drying out, protect ends through winter and give a dry scalp a barrier. Applied straight onto dry hair they just sit there and collect lint.

Wash day, build-up and honesty about clarifying

Blue Magic Cholesterol Conditioning Rinse is the deep conditioner of the range, aimed at hair that has been relaxed, coloured or worn under heat, and it is one of the better value tubs of its kind. Curl Activator is the wet look styler for curl sponges, finger coils and older activator routines.

The honest caveat with any petrolatum based tub is that it will not rinse out with a mild sulphate-free shampoo. Keep a clarifying shampoo in the cupboard and use it every three or four weeks, more often in London and the south-east where hard water minerals already coat the strand. Skip that and hair starts feeling permanently heavy no matter what else you do.

Questions

Blue Magic questions, answered

Is Blue Magic good for natural hair?
The leave-in styling conditioners are, particularly for detangling and twist outs on 4A to 4C hair. The heavier grease tubs suit sealing and protective styles rather than wash and go definition. Neither will do much for a wash and go on its own.
Which Blue Magic is best for dry hair?
Blue Magic Shea Butter Hair Conditioner or Coconut Oil Hair Conditioner for sealing, layered over a damp head. For wash day, Cholesterol Conditioning Rinse is the deep treatment. Together they cover most of what very dry, coarse hair needs weekly.
Does Blue Magic contain petrolatum?
Several of the 12 oz jars do, which is what makes them effective sealants and also what makes them harder to wash out. Check the ingredients on the specific tub. The 14 oz leave-in styling conditioners are generally lighter and easier to remove.
How do I wash Blue Magic out?
With a clarifying or sulphate shampoo rather than a co-wash. Apply the shampoo to dry or barely damp hair first, work it through the greasy sections, then add water. Two rounds is normal on hair that has been greased for a week.
Can I use Blue Magic on my scalp?
Yes, that is what the hair and scalp conditioners are designed for. Part the hair and apply a thin layer to the exposed scalp every few days, not daily. Bergamot and Originals Castor Oil are the two most used for this.
What is Blue Magic Cholesterol Conditioning Rinse for?
It is a deep conditioner for hair that has been relaxed, coloured or heat styled. Apply to clean damp hair, cover with a plastic cap for fifteen to twenty minutes, then rinse. It is one of the cheaper strengthening treatments that actually does something.
Is Blue Magic suitable for relaxed hair?
It has been a staple on relaxed hair for years. Carrot Oil Leave In Styling Conditioner and Olive Oil Leave-In Styling Conditioner both give slip for wrapping and roller setting, and the grease tubs protect the fragile new growth line between touch ups.
Will Blue Magic cause build-up?
The petrolatum based tubs will if you do not clarify. Every three or four weeks is the rough interval, sooner if you grease daily or live in a hard water area. Heaviness that conditioner cannot fix is the sign you have left it too long.
Can children use Blue Magic?
A small amount is commonly used before plaiting children's hair. Keep it light, favour the length over the scalp, and pick one of the leave-in styling conditioners rather than a heavy grease, which is harder to wash out of fine young hair.
What is Blue Magic Curl Activator for?
Wet look and coil styles. It suits curl sponge routines, finger coils and older activator sets on 4B and 4C hair, giving a soft moist finish rather than a firm cast. Layer it under a light oil to stop it drying out by evening.
How much should I use?
Far less than the tub size suggests. A fingertip for the leave-ins, a smaller one for the greases, warmed between the palms until it turns clear before it touches your hair. Cold product straight from the jar sits in lumps and never spreads evenly.
Is petroleum jelly bad for hair?
It is inert and does not soak in, so it neither helps nor harms the strand itself. As an edge and hairline sealant in cold weather it works well. The catch is removal, so keep it off the lengths unless you enjoy triple shampooing.
