About this collection
Rice water hair care — a traditional protein-rich rinse used for centuries (originally documented in Heian-era Japan, c. 794-1185 AD). Rice water provides amino acids, B vitamins, and minerals that strengthen the hair shaft. Used as a monthly rinse on curly hair for protein support and length retention.
How to make rice water
Method 1 (soaking): Rinse 1/2 cup rice. Cover with 2 cups water. Soak 30 minutes to 24 hours. Strain. Apply to clean damp hair. Leave 5-10 minutes. Rinse. Method 2 (fermented): Soak rice 24-48 hours at room temperature until fermented (slightly sour smell). Use diluted with normal water 1:1. Stronger protein effect.
Rice water for length retention
Anecdotal evidence from Asian and African hair traditions suggests rice water supports length retention by strengthening the cuticle and reducing breakage. Clinical evidence is limited but the cultural-traditional use is well-documented. Most UK curlies report softer, more elastic hair after consistent monthly use.
Cautions and warnings
Rice water is high in protein. Over-use causes protein overload (brittle, snapping hair). Use monthly maximum. Stop immediately if hair feels brittle or snaps with normal handling. Always follow with a deep moisture mask to balance.
