Tea tree for a scalp that feels congested
Why tea tree turns up in scalp products
Tea tree oil has a sharp, medicinal smell and a cooling tingle on the skin, and those two things are why it appears in so many scalp products. It is a cosmetic ingredient here. The products in this collection cleanse, add moisture and feel cooling on the scalp. They are not medicines, and we make no medical claims for them.
The formats here
Shampoos are the biggest group. Truzone tea tree shampoo comes in a litre bottle and is the value option for clarifying washes. Bellahair organic tea tree shampoo is sulphate free and better for curly, colour treated or fine hair. For conditioning, the Difeel tea tree premium hair mask and the tea tree leave in conditioning spray cover both ends of the wash.
Oils split into two kinds. Pure essential oil, such as Safah's 100% tea tree, needs diluting before it touches skin. Blended oils such as Nature Spell tea tree oil, Cantu tea tree and jojoba scalp oil, Jamaican Mango and Lime black castor with tea tree, and Difeel's premium natural oil are ready to use straight from the bottle.
Braids, twists and protective styles
Most tea tree sales in the UK go to people in braids. A scalp under a fresh install feels tight, and washing is awkward. Mazuri braid spray with tea tree and Irish moss goes on daily, Design Essentials anti itch and tension relief with tea tree and aloe goes on after a take down, and Luster's Pink tea tree treatment is the traditional pick for the same job.
ORS tea tree hairdress and Blue Magic tea tree leave in styling conditioner are the thicker options for dry scalps and coarse hair. Both go on in sections rather than all over.
Diluting pure tea tree
Neat tea tree oil is strong enough to irritate skin, so dilute it. A few drops into a tablespoon of a carrier oil such as coconut, olive or jojoba is the standard ratio, or add a few drops to a dollop of conditioner. Patch test on the inner arm and wait a day before putting it on your scalp. Keep it away from the eyes, and do not use it on broken skin.
Who it suits
Tea tree suits anyone whose scalp feels tight, dry or itchy after braids, heat, or a long stretch between washes. The cooling sensation is what most people are buying. If your scalp is sore, weeping or getting worse, stop using it and see a pharmacist or GP rather than working through a shelf of products.
