Plain black castor oil has a smoky, earthy smell that not everyone gets on with. The coconut version is the friendlier one in the range: same roasted oil, softened with coconut oil, and it smells sweet and tropical instead.
Coconut oil brings something practical as well as the scent. Its lauric acid content gives it a real affinity for hair protein, so it does more than sit on the outside of the strand the way heavier oils do.
