Plain black castor oil has a smoky, earthy smell that not everyone gets on with. The coconut version is the friendlier one in the range: same roasted oil, softened with coconut oil, and it smells sweet and tropical instead.
Coconut oil brings something practical as well as the scent. Its lauric acid content gives it a real affinity for hair protein, so it does more than sit on the outside of the strand the way heavier oils do.

Application tips
This is the last step, not the first. Water, then a leave-in, then this. Oil on dry hair with nothing underneath it has no moisture to trap.
Two or three drops per section, warmed and pressed down the length rather than raked, so the ends get the most of it. On the scalp, use it on wash night rather than daily, since it is heavy enough to build up.
Results
Ends stop looking dry within minutes and hold that for days, particularly under a twist-out where they usually go crispy first.
Coconut has a genuine grip on the protein in hair rather than forming a film over it, so combing costs fewer strands. The scent is the other half of the appeal, sweet and tropical instead of the woodsmoke that comes off the plain roasted oil.
