Shea butter on curls, sealing versus moisturising

Raw butter and shea-based formulas

Two different things share this shelf. Raw shea butter is the unrefined nut butter itself, sold in a tub, solid at room temperature and smelling faintly nutty. Ghana's Best Pure Shea Butter in the 10oz tub and Kuza 100 percent Pure African Shea Butter Chunky at 283g both sit in that group.

Shea-based formulas are shampoos, conditioners, creams and gels with shea worked in alongside water and other ingredients. The Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter line, Cantu Shea Butter Moisturising Cream Shampoo at 400ml and the Double Sheen Shea Butter trio all belong here. They spread more easily and are far less likely to build up.

Reading the label

Unrefined means the butter has not been bleached or deodorised. It keeps more of its natural colour, anywhere from ivory to yellow, and it smells of nuts rather than of nothing. Refined shea is white, odourless and slightly less rich.

Chunky, as in the Kuza tub, simply means it has not been whipped, so it arrives in lumps you soften in your hands. Whipped shea is airier and spreads with less effort.

Using it without ending up greasy

Raw shea butter is a sealant rather than a moisturiser. On dry hair it forms a coating and nothing gets in. Order matters: water or a leave-in first, then oil if you use one, then shea butter on top. That is the C in a LOC routine doing its job.

A pea-sized amount, warmed between the palms until it turns clear, covers a whole section on medium-length hair. If your hands still feel coated when you have finished, you used too much. For a lighter option, Mazuri Shea Butter Naturals Leave In Oil Moisturiser at 355ml or Creme Of Nature Mango and Shea Butter Leave-In at 250ml give the softness without the wax.

Winter, summer and hard water

Shea comes into its own in winter. Indoor heating drops humidity to around 30 percent, hair loses water to the air, and a sealing butter slows that down. It is the one time of year when most people can use the raw tub without it feeling like too much.

Summer is trickier. At 75 to 90 percent humidity, a thick butter tends to leave hair limp rather than protected, so a finishing product such as Cantu Shea Butter Style Stay Frizz-Free Finisher at 5oz does more. Because shea is heavy, hard water across the south-east compounds build-up, so clarify monthly if the raw tub is a regular part of your routine.

Who it suits

Dense 4a to 4c hair and locs get the most from raw shea. Coarse strands take the weight, and the coating helps hold moisture through a full week.

Fine 2a to 3a hair usually does better with a shea-based cream or shampoo than with the raw butter. If you have tried raw shea and hated it, that is probably why, rather than anything being wrong with the butter.

Questions

Shea butter questions, answered

Is raw shea butter too heavy for fine hair?
Usually, yes. Fine waves and looser curls go limp under it. A shea-based formula such as Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner or Creme Of Nature Mango and Shea Butter Leave-In gives you the softness without the weight.
What is the difference between refined and unrefined shea butter?
Unrefined shea keeps its natural colour and nutty smell, and it is richer. Ghana's Best Pure Shea Butter is unrefined. Refined shea is white and odourless, which some people prefer, though it loses a little of the character.
How do I soften hard shea butter?
Scrape a small piece out with a spoon, then work it between your palms for twenty to thirty seconds until it goes clear. The Kuza chunky tub needs this every time. Never melt a whole tub in a microwave.
Can I put shea butter on my scalp?
A thin layer is fine on a dry scalp, though a dedicated scalp oil reaches the skin more easily. If your scalp runs oily or you get flaking, keep butter on the lengths and use something lighter at the roots.
Does shea butter help with frizz in humid weather?
Up to a point. It coats the strand and slows water getting in, but a heavy layer in 90 percent humidity leaves hair flat. Cantu Shea Butter Style Stay Frizz-Free Finisher is the better summer option.
Can I use the same tub on my skin?
Yes. Ghana's Best and Kuza are both sold for hair and skin, and raw shea is a common choice for dry elbows, knees and hands. Keep separate scoops if you would rather not move hair product onto your face.
Which shea shampoo should I choose?
Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Deep Moisturising Shampoo at 384ml for dry, damaged hair, or Cantu Shea Butter Cream Shampoo at 400ml for a creamier wash. Africa's Best Kids Originals Shea Butter Conditioning Shampoo covers younger hair.
Does shea butter cause build-up?
It can, particularly in hard water areas and on low porosity hair. Use less than you think you need, and clarify once a month. Coated, dull hair that will not take on water is the sign to wash more thoroughly.
Is shea butter suitable for children's hair?
Generally yes, in small amounts. Africa's Best Kids Originals Shea Butter Conditioning Shampoo and Soft and Precious Nursery Jelly with Shea Butter are both made for younger hair. Patch test first if there is any nut sensitivity in the family.
How much should I use?
A pea-sized piece per section on medium-length hair, warmed until it turns clear. Most people start with far too much. If hair still looks shiny and slightly wet an hour after styling, halve the amount next time.
Does raw shea butter go off?
It keeps for one to two years in a sealed tub, away from heat and sunlight. It may change texture in a warm room and turn grainy after melting and resetting, which affects the feel rather than how well it works.
Is shea butter good for locs?
In small amounts. Dense locs hold onto product, so heavy butter can leave residue deep inside a loc that takes several washes to clear. A shea-based cream or the Fantasia IC Shea Butter Sheen Spray is easier to manage.
