About this collection
Protein treatments for curly hair — keratin-based, hydrolysed protein, amino-acid, and bond-building formulations that strengthen damaged hair. Used weekly for damaged or chemically-processed curls, monthly for maintenance on healthy hair. Over-use causes protein overload (brittle, snapping strands), so timing matters.
Protein treatment types
Mild protein: rice water rinses, daily protein leave-ins. Use weekly or as needed. Medium protein: Curlsmith Bond Curl Rehab (maleic acid + cysteine), most weekly bond-builders. Use weekly on damaged hair, monthly maintenance. Heavy protein: Aphogee Two-Step (animal hydrolysed protein), liquid keratin. Use every 6-8 weeks maximum on severely damaged hair only.
Signs you need protein
Strand stretch test on damp hair: stretches significantly then snaps with no recoil = needs protein. Stretches and recoils = balanced. Snaps instantly with no stretch = needs moisture, NOT protein. Other signs: hair feels limp and stretchy, struggles to hold curl pattern, breaks easily during normal handling.
Signs of protein overload
Hair feels brittle, straw-like, snaps with light tension. Curl pattern looks frizzy and unhealthy. Hair won't absorb moisture. The fix: stop all protein for 4-6 weeks, focus on intense moisture treatments (Camille Rose Algae Renew, SheaMoisture Manuka Honey Mask). Hair re-balances within 6-8 weeks.
