Africa's Best for everyday moisture

What Africa's Best covers

Africa's Best has been on shop shelves since the eighties and the packaging has barely changed, which tells you how steadily it sells. The range splits three ways: scalp and hair oils, wash day products, and the Kids Originals line. Prices are low, tub sizes are generous, and the textures are traditional rather than modern, which suits some hair and not others.

Hairdressings and oils

Super Gro, Herbal Gro Super and Triple Repair are hairdressings. They are thick, petrolatum based, and go on the scalp and roots in sections, a small amount at a time. The liquid oils, argan, coconut, Jamaican black castor and the Ultimate Herbal blend, are lighter and can go on the length as well. Use them to keep the scalp comfortable and the ends from splitting, and apply after washing while the hair still holds water.

A word on the names. Several products carry Gro or Growth on the label. Treat them as moisturising oils and hairdressings, which is what they are. Keeping length is a matter of reducing breakage over months, not something any single bottle delivers.

Wash day

Originals olive oil shampoo and the moisturising shampoo with conditioner cover the regular wash. Liquid hair mayonnaise is the deep conditioner: thick, protein leaning, and best used every few weeks rather than weekly. The rinse out and leave in deep conditioner does both jobs, and the instant detangling conditioner is the one for tangle heavy wash days.

Braid sheen spray with conditioner is the finishing product for braids and twists, and the honey and castor edge gel handles the hairline.

Kids Originals

The children's line is a proper sub range rather than a token product. Shea butter conditioning shampoo, protein enriched conditioner, the 2 in 1 natural conditioning detangler and the protein and vitamin hair and scalp remedy cover a child's wash day without the sting of adult formulas. There are also conditioning relaxer systems in regular and coarse strengths for families who use them, and those should be applied carefully and never on a scalp that is already sore or broken.

How it fits a UK routine

These are heavier products than most modern curl ranges, which works well through a British winter when indoor heating drops humidity to around 30% and hair goes brittle. In summer, lighten the load. Hard water in the south east combines with petrolatum based hairdressings and coats the hair, so a clarifying wash every three or four weeks keeps everything absorbing properly.

Questions

Africa's Best questions, answered

Do the Gro products make hair grow?
They are moisturising oils and hairdressings, and that is how we describe them. Keeping length comes down to reducing breakage over months, through gentle handling, regular moisture and sensible styling rather than any one product.
What is hair mayonnaise?
A thick, protein based deep conditioner with a mayonnaise like texture. Africa's Best liquid hair mayonnaise goes on after shampoo, sits for fifteen to twenty minutes, then rinses out. Use it every few weeks rather than weekly, since too much protein leaves hair stiff.
Is Super Gro suitable for locs?
Many loc wearers find petrolatum based hairdressings too heavy, because they collect at the root and are hard to rinse out. The lighter liquid oils such as Africa's Best argan or coconut oil suit locs better. Use them sparingly and clarify regularly.
Which Africa's Best oil is the lightest?
The argan and coconut oils are lightest, with the Ultimate Herbal oil in the middle. Castor based oils are thickest and best kept for the ends, or for sealing after a leave in on thick, coarse hair.
Can I use the Kids Originals range on adult hair?
Yes, especially if your hair is fine or your scalp is sensitive. The shea butter conditioning shampoo and protein enriched conditioner are milder versions of the adult formulas, and plenty of adults use the 2 in 1 detangler on wash day for the extra slip.
How do I apply a hairdressing without ending up greasy?
Part the hair into sections, dot a small amount on the scalp with a fingertip, then massage in. Do not scoop and spread. A tub should last months. If the roots look flat and shiny the next day, you have used far too much.
Is the relaxer system safe to use at home?
It is sold for home use with full instructions, and those instructions matter. Do a strand test, protect the scalp with the base cream provided, never apply over a scalp that is sore or scratched, and time it exactly. If you are unsure, have it done in a salon.
What is the difference between the rinse out and leave in conditioner and the hair mayonnaise?
The rinse out and leave in is lighter and can stay in the hair. The hair mayonnaise is a thick, protein leaning deep conditioner that always rinses out. Use the mayonnaise occasionally and the lighter conditioner weekly.
Does Africa's Best work on wavy hair?
The lighter oils and the instant detangling conditioner do. The hairdressings will flatten waves, so skip Super Gro and Triple Repair and stick to the wash day products with a few drops of argan oil on damp ends.
Why does my hair feel coated after a few weeks?
Petrolatum builds up, and hard water in London and the south east makes it worse. A clarifying wash every three or four weeks clears it. If build up is a constant problem, switch to the lighter liquid oils and keep hairdressing for the scalp only.
