Sunny Isle Jamaican black castor oil

What Jamaican Black Castor Oil actually is

Ordinary castor oil is cold pressed and comes out pale and clear. Jamaican Black Castor Oil is made by roasting the beans first, then pressing and boiling them, and the ash from that roasting is what gives it the dark colour, the smoky smell and a higher pH than the clear version. It is thicker, tackier and heavier on the hair, which is the whole point of it.

Sunny Isle is one of the better known names doing it. The oil is used for sealing ends, dressing a dry scalp and adding weight to fine strands, and it is a cosmetic product rather than a treatment for anything.

What is in this collection

Three groups. The butters and stylers are where the castor oil is blended into something easier to spread: Jamaican Black Castor Oil Pure Butter with Lavender, Pure Butter with Coconut and the Curly Styling Custard, which gives definition on twist outs and wash and gos without a hard cast.

The single oils cover Jamaican Organic Pimento Oil with Black Castor Oil, which carries a warming tingle from the pimento, Jamaican Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil and Organic Jojoba Oil in a 118 ml bottle. The Shea Coconut line handles wash day, with a Moisturizing Conditioner, an Intensive Repair Masque in a large 16 oz tub and the Knot Free Forever Leave In Detangler.

Using a thick oil without wearing it

Neat Jamaican Black Castor Oil is heavy enough to sit visibly on the hair if you go in hard. Two approaches work. Either warm a small amount between your palms and press it only onto the last few inches, over a damp leave-in, or dilute it into a lighter oil or your conditioner before it goes anywhere near your head.

On the scalp, part the hair and apply to the skin rather than tipping it over the top. Two or three times a week is plenty, and it needs washing out properly on your usual wash day. The butters are the easier route if you have never used a thick oil before, since the shea base makes it far more forgiving.

The kids line

Sunny Isle Kids covers the four things that actually matter on a child's wash day: Extreme Hydrating Shampoo, Extreme Hydrating Conditioner, the Moisture-Rich Leave-In Detangler and a Finishing Hair Butter. The detangler is the one that earns its place, because most tears on wash day come from the comb rather than the shampoo. Work through in small sections with fingers first.

Who it suits, and the British angle

Coarse, dry 4A to 4C hair takes to it easily. Curls from 3A to 3C do well with the butters and the custard but often find the neat oil too heavy. Fine and wavy hair should stick to the jojoba or the Shea Coconut conditioner. From October, when heating drops indoor humidity to around 30 percent, a sealing oil over damp hair genuinely helps the ends survive the season, and hard water areas want a clarifying wash every few weeks to keep the strand clean underneath it.

Questions

Sunny Isle questions, answered

What is the difference between Jamaican Black Castor Oil and regular castor oil?
Regular castor oil is cold pressed, pale and thinner. The Jamaican version roasts the beans first, and the ash from roasting makes it dark, smoky smelling, thicker and higher in pH. It sits more heavily on the strand, which suits coarse hair.
Does Sunny Isle Jamaican Black Castor Oil grow hair?
We make no growth claims for anything on this site. It is used for sealing, adding weight and dressing a dry scalp. Where people notice a difference it is usually because ends are breaking less, and less breakage means keeping the length you already have.
How often should I use it on my scalp?
Two or three times a week is enough. Part the hair, apply to the exposed scalp rather than over the top, and massage in. Wash it out properly on your normal wash day, since a thick oil left sitting for weeks collects residue.
Which Sunny Isle product is easiest to start with?
One of the butters. Jamaican Black Castor Oil Pure Butter with Coconut or with Lavender spreads far more easily than the neat oil and is much harder to overdo. The Curly Styling Custard is the one to try if you want definition.
Is the pimento oil meant to tingle?
Yes. Sunny Isle Jamaican Organic Pimento Oil with Black Castor Oil carries a warming, slightly spicy sensation from the pimento. If it stings rather than warms, wash it off and dilute it more next time, or switch to the plain butters.
Can I use Jamaican Black Castor Oil on fine hair?
Sparingly, on the ends only, over a damp leave-in. It is heavy enough to flatten fine or wavy hair quickly. Sunny Isle Organic Jojoba Oil is the lighter option in this range and behaves much better on 2A to 2C textures.
Is the Sunny Isle Kids range gentle enough for young children?
It is formulated for children's hair, and the Moisture-Rich Leave-In Detangler is the piece that makes the biggest difference to how wash day goes. Work in small sections, fingers before comb, and keep the shampoo away from eyes as usual.
What is the Shea Coconut Intensive Repair Masque for?
Weekly deep conditioning on dry or damaged hair, and the 16 oz tub is generous enough for thick hair. Apply to clean damp hair, cover with a plastic cap for twenty minutes and rinse. Follow with a leave-in and a sealing oil.
Does black castor oil smell strong?
It has a distinct smoky, nutty smell from the roasting, and it lingers. The butters with lavender and coconut cover it far better than the neat oil does. If the scent bothers you, use it as a pre-wash treatment instead of a leave-on.
Can I use it on locs?
Yes, on the scalp and lightly along the locs. Keep the amount small, because a thick oil builds up inside locs and is difficult to wash back out. Many loc wearers prefer to dilute it into a spray bottle with water and a little aloe.
Will it help with a dry, tight scalp?
A light application often makes a dry scalp feel more comfortable, and that is what most people use it for. It is a cosmetic oil, not a medicine, so persistent flaking, soreness or irritation is worth raising with a pharmacist.
How do I wash it out?
A normal shampoo handles it if you have used a sensible amount. For heavier applications or a pre-wash oiling, apply shampoo to dry hair first, work it through, then add water. That lifts oil far better than shampooing an already soaked head.
