Where Cantu fits in a curly routine
What Cantu makes and who it is for
Cantu is a shea butter based range built for curly, coily and wavy hair, and it is probably the most widely used textured hair brand in the UK. The formulas are rich and the price sits low, which is why so many people start here. The catch is that Cantu covers several distinct lines, and picking the wrong one is the usual reason someone says it did not work for them.
Working out which line you need
Shea Butter is the original and the heaviest. It suits thick, coarse or very dry hair, and the leave in conditioning repair cream is the product most people mean when they say Cantu. Avocado is the lighter set, with hair milk, mousse and hydrating curl activator for fine or low porosity hair that goes limp under shea butter. Grapeseed sits between the two, and the curling cream is a good middle ground for waves.
Beyond those, Acai Berry gel and the Jamaican Black Castor Oil line handle hold and edges. Guava conditioner and the apple cider vinegar root relief cover scalp comfort. Protective Styles is aimed at braids, locs and wigs rather than loose hair.
Building a wash day around it
A straightforward Cantu routine runs cleanse, condition, leave in, styler. Use the shea butter moisturising cream shampoo or the sulphate free cleansing cream shampoo for the wash, the complete conditioning co wash on weeks you do not want lather, then the deep treatment masque if the ends feel rough. Apply the leave in conditioning cream to soaking wet hair, follow with grapeseed curling cream or avocado mousse, and leave it alone while it dries.
Hard water, humidity and dry indoor air
London and most of the south east sit in a hard water area, and the minerals leave curls stiff and dull no matter what you put on afterwards. A clarifying wash every three or four weeks resets that. Apple cider vinegar root relief fits the same slot when the scalp feels tight.
Summer humidity here often sits between 75% and 90%, which pulls curls into frizz by lunchtime. Gel over cream helps, and the acai berry gel or the black castor oil taming gel hold through it. Winter is the opposite problem. Indoor heating drops the air to around 30% humidity, so the same routine leaves hair feeling dry. Swap the mousse for avocado hair milk and add the daily oil moisturiser between washes.
How much is too much
Cantu creams are heavy, and the most common mistake is layering three of them. Two products after your leave in is plenty for most hair. If curls go flat, greasy or coated, clarify and start again with less. Fine hair does better with the avocado line and a light hand. Coily hair can take the shea butter line at full strength.
