Standard locking gel works fine until the hair stops cooperating. Very coarse 4C textures, hair that has been texturised recently, and hair transitioning out of a relaxer all share the same problem: the twist unravels before the roots have set.

The reason to reach for this rather than a resistant wax is what happens later. Wax gets its grip from hardness, and hardness is what you end up scrubbing out months down the line. This holds through polymer strength instead and dissolves in water, so the extra grip does not cost you a dull, coated head of locs.
Apply on damp hair, root by root, and let it dry completely before you go anywhere near a pillow.
