Choosing between wigs, weaves and closures
What you will find here
This collection covers ready to wear wigs, lace front units, braiding hair and the bits and pieces that keep them looking right. Brands include Sleek, Sensationnel, Motown Tress, Vivica A. Fox and X Pression, alongside tools such as the Magic Collection lace loom hook needle and Red By Kiss edge scarves. There is also cleansing and conditioning made for units rather than growing hair, including the Shea Moisture Wig and Weave residue remover shampoo and its matching 2 in 1 conditioner and detangler.
Synthetic, heat friendly or human hair
Standard synthetic fibre holds its style through rain and wind, which suits a British winter, but it cannot take a straightener. Heat friendly synthetic can be styled at low temperatures, though it tangles faster with repeated passes. Human hair units such as the Sleek Hailey and Sleek Linda wigs colour, curl and straighten like your own hair, and the Virgin Gold units, Orianna and Dalva, sit at the top of that group.
Budget follows durability. A synthetic unit is a season. A well kept human hair unit is years.
Lace fronts, closures and the hairline
A lace front gives you a parting and a hairline you can style away from the face. Closures cover a smaller area and sit neatly under a sew in. Whichever you pick, the knots are what give the game away. Ebin tinted lace wig knots concealer takes the shine off them, and the Magic Collection lace loom hook needle lets you customise lace at home rather than booking a salon appointment every time.
If you wear a unit daily, keep an edge scarf in the bag. The Red By Kiss layering scarf holds edges flat while you set them, and it stops the lace band rubbing the same patch of hairline every morning.
Washing and refreshing a unit
Wigs and weaves collect product long before they look dirty. Sprays, gels and sheen settle at the base and dull the fibre. Wash a synthetic unit every ten to fifteen wears in cool water, and a human hair unit whenever it stops moving freely. The Shea Moisture Wig and Weave residue remover shampoo is built for that job, and Cantu Protective Styles hair bath and cleanser works down the braids underneath without unravelling them.
Air dry on a stand rather than a flat surface so the cap keeps its shape. A waterproof shampoo cape saves your clothes if you are doing this over the bath.
The hair underneath matters more
Protective styles only protect if the hair below is looked after. Keep the scalp clean and the braids moisturised between installs, and give yourself a week off between units where you can. Cantu Protective Styles hair freshener covers that middle stretch when a wash is not due but the braids feel stale. Length is kept by cutting down breakage, so slow take downs and patient detangling do more for you than any single bottle.
