Two Caribbean staples share this bottle, roasted Jamaican black castor oil and rosemary essential oil. It is a thick, undiluted oil aimed at the scalp rather than the lengths, although it does both. The parting-and-massage routine is where it earns its keep.

Roasted black castor oil gives the blend its weight and its dark colour, while rosemary leaf oil brings the woody, herbal scent that makes the massage worth doing properly. Tocopheryl acetate, better known as vitamin E, sits in there as an antioxidant. The form is a pure oil blend.

What it does

  • Nourishes the scalp surface and the follicle
  • Conditions and adds shine when worked through the lengths
  • Carries a woody, herbal rosemary scent
  • Vitamin E adds antioxidant protection against UV and environmental exposure

How to use it

Section the hair to expose the scalp along each parting and apply a small amount directly. Massage firmly in circular motions for 3 to 5 minutes, then leave it on rather than rinsing. Use it daily or every other day and stay consistent for at least 12 to 16 weeks. Whatever is left on your hands can go through the lengths for conditioning and shine.

Suitable for all hair types, and a sensible pick for anyone building a regular scalp massage habit. 4 oz / 118 ml.

Application tips

Use it on the days between washes rather than straight after one. Freshly washed skin does not need much; a scalp three or four days in does.

Warm the bottle in your hands first, apply sparingly along the rows, and give the whole head one pass before going back for a second. Trying to finish each row perfectly means the back never gets done properly.

Results

Scalp comfort improves within a couple of applications, and the herbal, woody scent is a large part of why people keep using it rather than a plainer oil.

Through the lengths it conditions and puts a soft shine on hair that had gone matte. There is vitamin E in the blend doing antioxidant work, which matters most for anyone whose hair spends a lot of time in sun and wind. Breakage on the comb drops off.
