Xtra Dark is the same castor oil taken further. The beans roast for longer, which drives the colour darker, raises the ash content and pushes the pH further towards alkaline. In the hand it is noticeably thicker than the Original.
That matters most if your hair is coarse and high porosity, or if the Original never quite felt like enough. The heavier oil coats better, holds moisture in longer and gives more slip on a detangle, and on the scalp it is the more intensive of the two for a proper massage. It is the wrong place to start if your hair is fine or you dislike heavy products, because it will weigh curls down and take a wash to shift.
