Xtra Dark is the same castor oil taken further. The beans roast for longer, which drives the colour darker, raises the ash content and pushes the pH further towards alkaline. In the hand it is noticeably thicker than the Original.
That matters most if your hair is coarse and high porosity, or if the Original never quite felt like enough. The heavier oil coats better, holds moisture in longer and gives more slip on a detangle, and on the scalp it is the more intensive of the two for a proper massage. It is the wrong place to start if your hair is fine or you dislike heavy products, because it will weigh curls down and take a wash to shift.

Application tips
Cold, straight from the bottle, this one drags. Warm it in your hands until it moves freely, or you will use three times what you need.
On the scalp, one drop per row is genuinely enough. For detangling, put it on dry hair before you wet it, leave it half an hour, then shampoo. That pre-poo is where the extra thickness earns its money rather than as a daily leave-on.
Results
It coats heavily and stays coated. Coarse, thirsty hair that drinks the Original in a day holds moisture from this one for three or four, and a detangle after a pre-poo goes through with far less resistance.
On the scalp the effect is more intensive, and the smoky smell is stronger to match the longer roast. Fine hair will feel weighed down and need a proper wash to shift it, so it rewards being used deliberately.
