KeraCare for relaxed and natural textures

A salon brand that works at home

KeraCare is Avlon's professional line and it has been in UK salons for decades. Most of the range was built for relaxed and heat styled hair, then Natural Textures and Curl Essence were added for people wearing their curls out. That history is worth knowing, because it explains why two products with the same brand on the bottle behave completely differently.

The ranges, and who each suits

Curl Essence is the curly line. Coconut curl activator, moisturising curling cream, curling jelly and coco water cover wash to style for loose curls through to tight coils, with the coconut co wash for weeks you skip lather. Natural Textures is the coilier sibling, and the butter cream and leave in conditioner are the standouts.

Humecto creme conditioner is the one that crosses over to everyone. It is a heavy deep conditioner for dry, brittle hair and it comes in sizes up to 2300g for anyone getting through it. Thermal Wonder pre poo conditioner goes on before you wash if the hair is fragile from heat or colour.

Wash day and wrap sets

First Lather is a clarifying shampoo, so use it monthly or when build up is obvious rather than every week. Hydrating detangling shampoo is the weekly wash. If you set your hair, the foam wrap set lotion is the reason a lot of people buy KeraCare in the first place. It comes in regular and extra hold, and it gives a smooth wrap or roller set that survives a damp walk home.

The dry and itchy scalp moisturising shampoo is the one to reach for when the scalp feels tight, since it cleanses without stripping and leaves more moisture behind than a standard clarifier.

Gels, edges and hold

Gel Essence comes in four versions and the naming is not obvious. Super hold is the firmest. Strengthening and moisturising sit in the middle. Anti shedding is the one people use on fragile hair when they still want a slick style. Curl Essence healthy edges is the smaller pot for the hairline. All four are light enough on alcohol to avoid the white flaking you get from cheap gels, provided you let each layer dry.

Hard water and litre sizes

Hard water across London and the south east leaves mineral deposits that make curls stiff and shampoo lather poorly. If your hair feels coated a few days after washing, the monthly First Lather wash matters more than any leave in you add afterwards.

The gallon and litre sizes are here because stylists and anyone with a house full of long hair get through small bottles quickly. Decant into a pump bottle rather than lifting a 3790ml jug in the shower.

Questions

KeraCare questions, answered

Is KeraCare only for relaxed hair?
No. The older lines such as Humecto and the foam wrap lotions were built around relaxed and heat styled hair, but Curl Essence and Natural Textures are made for natural curls and coils. Pick by line rather than by brand.
What is the difference between Curl Essence and Natural Textures?
Curl Essence is lighter and aimed at defining loose to medium curls, with coconut based activators and jellies. Natural Textures is richer and suits tight coils, dense hair and anyone who needs more slip when detangling. The butter cream is the heaviest thing in either line.
Which KeraCare gel should I use?
Super hold for slicked buns and firm styles, strengthening or moisturising Gel Essence for everyday curl definition, and anti shedding if your hair is fragile and you still want a smooth finish. Healthy edges is the small pot for the hairline.
How often should I use First Lather shampoo?
Once a month for most people, or whenever hair feels coated and product stops absorbing. It is a clarifying wash, so following it with Humecto creme conditioner or another deep treatment keeps the hair from feeling stripped.
Can I use the foam wrap lotion on natural hair?
Yes, on roller sets, flexi rods and twist outs. Apply to damp hair section by section, then dry fully under a hood or with a diffuser. Extra hold suits thick or resistant hair, while regular suits fine hair that goes stiff easily.
Is the big tub of Humecto worth it?
If you deep condition weekly, the 2300g tub works out far cheaper per use than the small size. It is thick, so scoop with a spatula rather than wet hands to keep water out of the jar and the product usable for longer.
What does the Thermal Wonder pre poo actually do?
It goes on dry hair before shampoo to soften it and cut the tangling that starts the moment water hits. Useful if you blow dry, press or flat iron, and useful in winter when hair is drier and snaps more easily during detangling.
Does KeraCare help with an itchy scalp?
The dry and itchy scalp moisturising shampoo cleanses gently and leaves more moisture on the scalp than a standard clarifying wash, which most people find more comfortable. If irritation persists, speak to a pharmacist or GP rather than switching products repeatedly.
Which KeraCare product adds shine?
High sheen glossifier for a finishing layer on pressed or straightened hair, and Curl Essence oil cocktail for curls, which works on damp hair before styling or on dry ends afterwards. Both are light, so start with a few drops.
Are the litre and gallon sizes for salons only?
Anyone can buy them. They are popular with stylists and with families sharing products. Decant into a smaller bottle for the shower, and keep the large container closed and out of direct sunlight so the formula stays stable.
