About 4A coily hair

Type 4A is defined S-coils — tight S-shaped patterns about the diameter of a crochet needle (2-3mm). 4A is the loosest of the type 4 family but shares the key type-4 characteristics: high density, significant shrinkage (50-70%), and intensive moisture needs. The pattern is clearly visible at rest and holds reliably when properly moisturised.

Identifying 4A hair

Pattern: tight S-coils, crochet-needle thin (2-3mm). The S-shape is clearly visible — sharper than the ringlets of type 3, with angular bends rather than smooth curves. Shrinkage 50-70%. Pattern shows in single strands when stretched.

Compare with 3C (forms full corkscrew spirals, not S-coils) and 4B (Z-pattern with sharper angles, less smooth). 4A's S-coil is the deciding feature — if your hair makes spirals at rest, you're 3C. If it makes sharper angular bends, you're 4B.

What 4A hair needs

Heavy butter-based stylers and richly-emollient leave-ins. The LOC method (Liquid → Oil → Cream) is the standard 4A wash-day. Sealing oils (jojoba, argan, sweet almond, castor) lock moisture in. Weekly deep conditioning under heat is non-negotiable — without heat penetration, conditioner stays on the surface.

Frizz reduces dramatically with the right moisture system. The classic 4A complaint is dryness; the classic 4A fix is layered moisture sealed with oil. Stretching styles (twist-outs, braid-outs) protect the pattern between wash days.

The 4A wash-day routine

Pre-poo with a warm oil treatment 30 minutes before shampoo (optional but recommended). Cleanse with a sulphate-free shampoo once a week, or co-wash. Deep condition under heat for 30 minutes (heat cap, hooded dryer, or plastic cap with body heat). Apply leave-in to soaking-wet hair, follow with oil, then heavy butter or cream.

Section the hair (4-6 sections) for thorough product distribution. Detangle with fingers and a wide-tooth comb while conditioner is in. Style stretched (two-strand twists, braids) for length retention and pattern definition.

Sealing oils and emollients for 4A

Penetrating oils for moisture: coconut oil, olive oil, avocado oil. Apply on damp hair after leave-in to enter the cortex. Sealing oils for surface protection: jojoba (closest molecular match to sebum), argan, sweet almond. Apply on top of cream.

Heavier sealing oils: castor, JBCO (Jamaican Black Castor Oil). Use on ends or scalp for thickness/growth. Avoid coating the entire strand with heavy castor — it builds up and blocks moisture penetration on next wash day.

UK 4A-specific care

Hard water in London/SE/Anglia raises 4A porosity over time. Chelating clarifying every 3 weeks is essential. UK chlorinated pool water also damages 4A — pre-rinse with tap water before swimming.

Cold UK winter weather (especially with central heating) drops indoor humidity to 30% — increase your moisture layers and shift to heavier butters. Summer humidity is generally fine for 4A (the dew point helps draw moisture into the strand).

All 4A products in this collection are screened for heavier emollient formulations suitable for defined coils. Free UK delivery over £25.

4A defined coil care

Type 4A is the loosest of the type 4 family — defined S-coils the width of a chopstick. 4A's signature is springy coil definition with naturally high density. The right routine emphasises moisture-locking butters and gel-cream stylers that hold coil shape through humidity without flattening volume.

4A holds curl pattern for 4-7 days with proper protection. Twist-outs and braid-outs are the highest-yield styles for 4A — they stretch the pattern slightly, reducing shrinkage and increasing apparent length while still showing defined coils.

Shrinkage management

4A shrinks 50-75% — your true length is hidden when air-dried freely. Stretching methods: banding (small hair-ties along sections, removed when dry), African threading (yarn-wrapped sections), or blow-out on cool setting with a wide-tooth comb attachment. Heat-free options preserve coil health long-term.

4A hair FAQs

Am I 4A or 3C?
4A forms S-coils with angular bends. 3C forms full corkscrew spirals. The deciding test: stretch a damp strand. 4A makes a sharper S, 3C makes a smooth corkscrew loop.
Am I 4A or 4B?
4A coils are smooth S-shapes. 4B coils have sharper Z-bends with angular corners. If your hair pattern is curvy at rest, 4A. If it has sharper angular bends like a zigzag, 4B.
Best curl cream for 4A?
Heavy butter-based: Camille Rose Almond Jai Twisting Butter, Curlaide Moisture Butter, SheaMoisture Curl Smoothie (everyday), Oyin Boing! Coil Styler (premium hand-mixed).
LOC or LCO for 4A?
LOC (Liquid → Oil → Cream) for most 4A — oil seals the cuticle quickly before moisture escapes. Low-porosity 4A may prefer LCO. Test both and observe which gives longer-lasting moisture.
How often should I wash 4A?
Once a week with sulphate-free shampoo. Co-wash mid-week if needed. Over-washing strips the moisture coils need.
Best deep conditioner for 4A?
SheaMoisture Raw Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque, Curlsmith Bond Curl Rehab (high porosity), Camille Rose Algae Renew, Oyin What the Hemp Deep Moisture Mask. All under heat for 30 minutes.
Do I need protein treatments for 4A?
Yes, in balance with moisture. Use every 2-3 weeks. Rice water rinses, Curlsmith Bond Curl Rehab, Aphogee. Over-protein causes brittle 4A that snaps — alternate with moisture masks.
How do I prevent 4A breakage?
Satin pillowcase or bonnet at night. Detangle only in conditioner with fingers/wide-tooth comb. Stretching styles (twist-outs, braid-outs) reduce manipulation. Trim every 8-12 weeks to remove split ends before they travel up the strand.
Best UK heat protectant for 4A?
Curlsmith Miracle Shield — the most-recommended for type 4. Stay below 160°C with any heat tool. Avoid daily heat styling — 4A's tight bend pattern is particularly heat-sensitive.
Why is my 4A so dry?
Tighter pattern = less surface area for natural scalp oils to coat each strand. Compensation: layered moisture through product (LOC method), weekly deep conditioning under heat, sealing oils. Most 4A dryness is solved by adding more moisture steps, not fixing something broken.
How much shrinkage is normal for 4A?
50-70%. A 12-inch stretched strand appears 4-6 inches when dry. This is healthy elasticity, not lost length. Stretching styles display the full length on styled days.
Best 4A starter kit under £45?
SheaMoisture Coconut Smoothie (£12) + Camille Rose Almond Jai (£18) + SheaMoisture Raw Shea Deep Treatment Masque (£14) covers leave-in, daily styler, weekly mask for ~£44.
Should I do protective styles full-time?
Most 4A curlies wear protective styles 50-80% of the time (twists, braids, mini-twists). Combine with regular wash-and-go weeks for moisture rebalance. Avoid styles that pull at the hairline — risk of traction alopecia.
Is 4A the same as kinky-curly?
4A is defined coils; kinky-curly is a marketing term that covers 4A-4C generally. Look at the curl shape — distinct S-shape coils = 4A.
Best UK 4A wash-day product order?
Pre-poo with oil → sulphate-free shampoo → deep conditioner with heat → leave-in → cream → oil → gel (LOC method).
Why does my 4A look frizzy after styling?
Either too little hold (need gel layered over cream), or too much disturbance during drying (don't touch styled hair until 80%+ dry).
How often should 4A wash?
Weekly. Co-wash midweek if needed. 4A doesn't need daily washing — the natural sebum cycle takes 5-7 days to fully spread down 4A strands.
Best UK 4A stretching method without heat?
African threading or banding. Both yield 60-80% length reveal with zero heat damage. Threading is overnight; banding is during the dry phase of wash day.
Best UK 4A starter kit under £55?
Camille Rose Almond Jai (£18) + Camille Rose Curl Love Moisture Milk (£14) + Bounce Curl Satin Bonnet (£10) + Camille Rose Algae Renew Mask (£16) = £58.
