Silicon Mix for damaged and over-processed hair

What Silicon Mix is

Silicon Mix is a Dominican salon brand, and the deep treatments are what made its name. The original pink tub has been passed around by word of mouth for years, mainly among people with heat styled, relaxed or badly tangled hair who want a treatment that works in twenty minutes rather than an hour.

The three lines

The original line is the pink one: Silicon Mix hair treatment and the matching shampoo. It is the richest and the most silicone heavy, and it gives the slip and shine the brand is known for. Bamboo Extract is the strengthening line, with a nutritive shampoo, a deep treatment and a leave in, aimed at hair that snaps rather than hair that is simply dry.

Moroccan Argan Oil is the third, and the softest of the three. The shampoo, deep conditioning treatment and leave in conditioner suit dry, coarse or over processed hair that needs moisture more than protein.

How to use the treatments

Shampoo first, squeeze the water out, then apply the treatment from mid length to ends. Cover with a cap, leave it fifteen to twenty minutes, and use gentle heat if you have a hood dryer or a warm towel. Rinse thoroughly. The results show immediately, which is why people keep buying it, and it does not need using more often than every second or third wash.

The leave ins go on damp hair afterwards. Bamboo Extract leave in for strength, and Moroccan Argan leave in or the intensive leave in and shine conditioner for softness and gloss.

Detangle while the treatment is still in the hair. That is where most of the value sits for anyone with thick or tangle prone hair, and it saves the breakage that comes from forcing a comb through afterwards. Work in four sections, from the ends upwards, then rinse.

Who it suits

This range works best on hair that is heat styled, colour treated, relaxed, or coarse and tangle prone. It gives loose curls weight and shine. Very fine hair can go limp under it, and anyone following a strict silicone free routine will want to check the ingredients before buying, since the clue is in the name.

UK water and clarifying

Silicones coat the hair, which is exactly why the treatments feel so good, and that coating needs removing every few weeks or it layers up. Hard water across London and the south east adds mineral deposits to the same layer. A clarifying shampoo once a month keeps the treatments working. Without it, hair starts feeling heavy and stops absorbing anything.

Questions

Silicon Mix questions, answered

Which Silicon Mix should I buy first?
The original pink hair treatment if your hair is dry, tangled or heat styled. Bamboo Extract if it snaps easily and needs strengthening. Moroccan Argan if it is coarse and dry but not fragile. Most people start with the original.
How long do I leave the treatment on?
Fifteen to twenty minutes under a cap is plenty, and longer adds little. Gentle heat from a hood dryer or a warm towel helps it work faster, and rinsing thoroughly afterwards stops the hair feeling weighed down.
Does Silicon Mix contain silicones?
Yes, and that is what gives the slip and the shine. If you follow a silicone free routine, this range is not for you. If you use silicones and clarify regularly, it does the job it is bought for.
Can I use it on natural hair?
Plenty of people do, especially for detangling before a wash and go or a blow dry. It adds weight, so tight coils that rely on volume may not like it. Clarify monthly and it stays manageable.
How often should I deep condition with it?
Every second or third wash for most hair, and weekly if the hair is heat styled or colour treated and clearly damaged. It is rich enough that overusing it leaves hair feeling heavy rather than soft.
What is the difference between the treatment and the leave in?
The treatment rinses out and does the heavy work. The leave in stays in damp hair and gives slip, shine and a little protection before you style. Using both is normal. Using only the leave in gives a fraction of the effect.
Is Silicon Mix good for bleached hair?
It is popular with bleached and colour treated hair because it restores slip and shine quickly. Bamboo Extract is the better of the two for hair that has turned fragile. Neither replaces a bond building treatment or a decent trim.
Do I need a matching shampoo?
The matching shampoos pair well, though any gentle shampoo works. What you do need is a clarifying wash once a month, especially in a hard water area, or the silicones and minerals layer up and the treatment stops feeling as good.
Will it help my hair feel less tangled?
That is the main reason people buy it. The slip from the treatment makes combing far easier straight after rinsing. Detangle in the shower while the treatment is still in, working from the ends upwards in sections.
