Motions for relaxed and transitioning hair

What Motions is built for

Motions is a salon brand that has been part of British Black hair care since the nineties. It was built around relaxed and heat styled hair, and the Active Moisture line still does that job better than almost anything at the price. Hydrate My Curls was added later for natural curls and coils, so the range now covers both.

The Active Moisture line

This is the core of it. The Nourish and Restore lavish shampoo cleans without stripping, and it comes in a 32oz bottle for anyone getting through it quickly. Active Moisture Plus conditioner is the follow up, thick enough to work as a short deep conditioner if you leave it on under a cap for ten minutes. The Active Moisture leave in detangler is the wet hair step, sprayed section by section before you comb.

Together those three cover a full wash day, and for a lot of people that is all they buy.

Relaxed hair benefits most from the pairing, because it is the moisture step that keeps the ends from snapping between touch ups. Natural hair uses the same three products differently, leaning on the detangler for slip before a twist out rather than before a wrap.

Oils, sheen and hairdressing

Marula natural therapy hair and scalp oil is the lightest, and it goes on damp hair or a dry scalp. The weightless daily oil moisturiser is the between wash product for the length. Hair and scalp daily moisturising hairdressing is the thick one for dry, coarse hair, applied in sections.

Oil sheen and conditioning spray is the finishing layer for a wrap, a press or braids. Spray at arm's length in short passes and keep it off the roots, since it settles and dulls the hair if you overdo it.

Styling

The versatile foam styling lotion is for roller sets, wraps and blow dries. Apply to damp hair, dry fully, and the hold stays flexible rather than crunchy. Hydrate My Curls hair pudding is the one for wash and go styles and twist outs, thicker and creamier, and it defines without a hard cast.

A weekly routine

Shampoo, condition, leave in detangler, then either the foam lotion for a set or the hair pudding for curls. Between washes, use the daily oil moisturiser on the ends and a little marula oil on the scalp. In winter, when indoor heating drops humidity to around 30%, add a second pass of the oil moisturiser midweek. Hard water in the south east dulls the shine this range is known for, so clarify roughly monthly.

Questions

Motions questions, answered

Is Motions only for relaxed hair?
No, though most of the range was designed with relaxed and heat styled hair in mind. Hydrate My Curls hair pudding is made for natural curls and coils, and the Active Moisture conditioner and leave in detangler work on any texture.
Which Motions conditioner should I buy?
Active Moisture Plus conditioner covers most people, and the 32oz size is far better value if you wash weekly. Leave it on under a cap for ten minutes when hair feels rough and it doubles as a short deep conditioner.
What is the foam styling lotion for?
Roller sets, wraps and blow dries. Apply to damp hair section by section, then dry fully under a hood or with a dryer. It holds the set without the stiffness of an old fashioned setting lotion, so the hair still moves.
Does the oil sheen spray make hair greasy?
Only if you spray too close or aim at the roots. Hold it a hand's width away, use short passes over the length, and stop before it looks wet. It is a finishing product for a completed style, not a moisturiser.
Can I use Motions on my child's hair?
The Active Moisture leave in detangler is the useful one, since it makes combing far easier. Use a light hand, avoid the hairdressing on young scalps, and rinse shampoo thoroughly at the nape where it tends to hide.
What is the difference between the daily oil moisturiser and the hairdressing?
The oil moisturiser is a light lotion for the length, used between washes. The hairdressing is a thick cream for the scalp and for dry, coarse hair, applied in sections. Using the hairdressing all over will flatten fine hair.
Is the marula oil good for scalp massage?
It is light enough to use on the scalp without leaving the roots flat, and it absorbs quickly. Apply a few drops in sections and massage with fingertips. It also works on damp hair before a blow dry.
How do I keep a wrap set from dropping in damp weather?
Dry the hair completely before you unwrap it, use the versatile foam styling lotion rather than a cream, and finish with a light mist of oil sheen spray. UK summer humidity climbing past 80% will still soften a set by the evening.
Which Motions shampoo is the moisturising one?
Both the Nourish and Restore and Nourish and Care lavish shampoos sit in the moisturising family and clean without stripping. The 32oz Nourish and Restore bottle is the one to buy if you wash weekly or share it in a family.
