Eco Styler gel, choosing the right formula

What Eco Styler gel actually is

Eco Styler is a firm hold styling gel sold in large tubs, and it has been the default gel for wash and gos, slick buns and braid downs in Black and mixed hair households for decades. It is water based, it holds hard, and it washes out with shampoo. The versions differ mainly by the oil or protein added to the same base.

Sizes run from 8 oz jars up through 16 oz tubs to the 5 lb Krystal Clear pack, which is the one salons and large families buy.

Which version to pick

Olive Oil is the original and the safest starting point, giving hold with a bit of shine. Argan Oil is slightly softer and better on hair that goes dry and dusty. Coconut suits looser curls that want definition without weight. Black Castor Oil and Flax Seed Oil is the moisture leaning option, and the one people in braids and twists tend to prefer.

Protein and Super Protein add strength to the mix, which suits fine or weakened hair but will feel stiff if you are using protein products elsewhere in the same wash. Krystal is the clear, plain version with no added oil, which is the pick if scented gels have irritated your scalp before. Curl And Wave is the lightest hold in the group.

The Colored Hair Styling Gel deposits a temporary tint alongside the hold, so it is bought for a look rather than for everyday styling.

Getting a wash and go right

Apply to soaking wet hair rather than damp. Section it, rake the gel through, then either shake it out or smooth it down depending on the finish you want. Do not touch it again until it is completely dry, then scrunch the cast out with a few drops of oil on your palms.

Layer over a leave in conditioner rather than putting gel on bare hair. Gel on its own gives hold with no moisture underneath, and that is what leaves coils feeling brittle by day two.

Hard water, humidity and flaking

The main complaint about heavy gels is white flaking, and it usually traces back to three things: too much product, hair that was not wet enough on application, and hard water. London and the south east are hard water areas, and the minerals in it react with product residue sitting on the hair.

A clarifying wash once a month clears that. Through a British summer at 75 to 90% humidity, a firmer version such as Super Protein or Krystal will hold a set that Curl And Wave would lose by lunchtime. Through winter at around 30% indoor humidity, a lighter hand with more leave in underneath works better than piling on more gel.

Questions

Eco Styler questions, answered

Which Eco Styler gel is best for 4c hair?
Black Castor Oil and Flax Seed Oil, or the classic Olive Oil, layered over a leave in conditioner on soaking wet hair. Both give the firm hold coily hair needs for a defined wash and go without the dryness a plain gel leaves.
What is the difference between Krystal and the oil versions?
Krystal is the clear, plain gel with no added oil, so it is the one people choose when a scented or oil based gel has irritated them before. The oil versions add shine and a little softness to the same firm base.
Why does my Eco Styler flake?
Three usual causes: too much product, hair that was not wet enough when you applied it, and hard water residue. Apply to soaking wet hair over a leave in, use less than you think, and clarify monthly in the south east.
What is the difference between Protein and Super Protein?
Super Protein is the stronger of the two, with more hold and more protein in the mix. Both suit fine or weakened hair. Avoid stacking them with a protein conditioner in the same wash, or the hair ends up stiff.
How do I get rid of the crunchy cast?
Wait until the hair is completely dry, then rub a few drops of light oil between your palms and scrunch upward through the hair. Scrunching before it dries breaks the set and gives you frizz instead of definition.
Is the 5 lb tub worth buying?
If you style weekly, share with family, or work behind a chair, yes. The Krystal Clear 5 lb pack of two costs far less per ounce than 8 oz jars. Keep the lid shut, because large tubs dry at the surface.
Can I use Eco Styler for braids and cornrows?
Yes, that is one of its main jobs. Use it as you braid down to keep the parts clean and the plait smooth. The Black Castor Oil and Flax Seed Oil version is the one most people prefer for braid work.
Does it work on wavy or 2c hair?
It does, but use a fraction of the amount and pick a lighter version such as Curl And Wave or Coconut. The firmer gels weigh loose waves down and leave a visible cast that will not scrunch out cleanly.
Will gel dry my hair out?
Gel on its own gives hold without moisture, so always layer it over a leave in conditioner on wet hair. Used that way it seals moisture in. Used on dry hair with nothing underneath, it will leave coils feeling brittle.
What does the Colored Hair Styling Gel do?
It holds like the rest of the range while depositing a temporary tint. The pigment sits on the surface and rinses out with shampoo, so it suits a short term look rather than an everyday wash and go routine.
