About curl-friendly brushes

Brushing curly hair has long been controversial — done wrong, it disrupts the curl pattern and breaks strands. Done right with the correct brush, it detangles efficiently, distributes product evenly, and even enhances curl clumping (the Pineapple Brush method).

This collection covers Zenvy's curl-specific brushes — Bounce Curl EdgeLift series (Volume, Define, Slick-Flex, Slick-Dense), Curly Hair Solutions Flexy Brush, Denman-style brushes for curl shaping, and wide-tooth detangling brushes for wet hair.

The right brush depends on use case: wet detangling = Flexy Brush or wide-tooth comb in conditioner; curl shaping = Denman or Bounce Curl Define EdgeLift on damp hair with styler; volume + lift at roots = EdgeLift Volume in the Pineapple Brush method.

When to brush curly hair

Brushing curly hair: only in conditioner, only on wet hair, only with wide-tooth combs or curl-specific brushes (Denman, Tangle Teezer). Brushing dry curly hair causes breakage, frizz, and pattern disruption. Brushing in conditioner with proper tool enhances clump formation and gives defined curls.

Curl brush types

Wide-tooth comb: gentlest, suitable for all types. Use only in conditioner. Denman D3 (or imitator): mid-range, suitable for type 2-3 in conditioner. Creates clump definition. Tangle Teezer Original: detangling brush, suitable for type 2-3 in conditioner. Less clump formation than Denman.

For type 4: usually finger-detangle only. Brushes (even gentle ones) often cause too much breakage for tight coils. Use a wide-tooth comb in conditioner if necessary, in 4-6 sections.

Curl brush FAQs

Should I brush curly hair?
Yes, with the right brush at the right time. Wet brushing in conditioner with a Flexy Brush or wide-tooth comb is gentle. Dry brushing with a Denman or EdgeLift can enhance definition. Avoid brushing dry curls without product.
Wet or dry brushing — which is better for curly hair?
Wet, with conditioner in. The slip from conditioner protects the cuticle, reduces breakage, and lets the brush move through tangles without snagging. Always start at ends and work upward.
What's the Pineapple Brush method?
Bend at the waist with hair upside down, brush from roots to ends with an EdgeLift brush, then flip back upright. Adds root volume and clump definition without disrupting the curl pattern. Watch the Bounce Curl tutorial videos for technique.
Denman or EdgeLift — which brush should I get?
EdgeLift brushes are softer and more curl-friendly for type 3–4 textures. Denmans are stiffer and shape curls more aggressively (better for type 2–3a). Most curl-care experts recommend EdgeLift now over Denman.
Should I brush my curly hair?
Only in conditioner, only when wet. Brushing dry curly hair causes breakage. Use a wide-tooth comb or Denman brush only in conditioner.
Best UK curl brush for type 3?
Denman D3 (~£14) or Denman D4 (~£18). Both enhance clump formation when used in conditioner.
Best UK detangler for type 2 hair?
Tangle Teezer The Original (£10-15). Designed for thin to medium hair. Use in conditioner for best results.
Should I use a boar bristle brush?
For type 2 only. Boar bristle distributes scalp sebum down the lengths. Use sparingly, on dry hair, for type 2A-2B. Not recommended for type 3-4.
Best UK wide-tooth comb under £10?
Wooden wide-tooth comb (£5-8) from Cult Beauty or Amazon UK. Smooth glide, gentle on cuticle.
How often should I brush?
Only during conditioning. Daily brushing of dry curly hair causes breakage. Most curlies brush 1-2 times per week (during wash days only).
Best UK curl brush for finger-detangling alternatives?
Bounce Curl Define EdgeLift Comb (£12). Edge-friendly comb that doubles as a curl-defining tool.
