Curly and coily hair care for men

What the range covers

Three jobs, mostly. Cutting and grooming kit from WAHL, including the 15 piece Sure Cut clipper kit and the beard trimmer and beard oil set. Grey coverage from Bigen EZ, Schwarzkopf LIVE Men, Cameleo Men, Nicka K and Just For Men. Then styling, which is where Dax, Got2b, SCurl and Gabri sit.

There is a textured hair side too. Cantu For Men Curl Activator Cream and the Aunt Jackie’s Curl Spell masque are built for curls and coils rather than for straight hair pushed into shape with wax.

Choosing a styling product by finish

Wax and paste give a matte, pliable finish you can rework through the day. The Dax Hair Shaper and the Got2b Phenomenal molding paste both sit here, and they suit short crops, textured quiffs and messy fringes.

Pomade and hair dressing give shine and a smoother line. Dax High and Tight is the strong, glossy end, Dax Short and Neat is the light version for a neat side part, and SCurl 360 Style Wave Control Pomade is built specifically for training waves.

Gabri Aqua Wax is water based, which matters if you wash daily. Water based products rinse out with ordinary shampoo. Oil based pomades usually need a clarifying wash to shift them properly.

Grey coverage without the flat black look

The usual complaint about men’s colour is that it lands too dark and too solid. There are two ways round that. Pick a shade lighter than you think you need, since men’s kits are already built to run dark, or use a gradual product such as Just For Men Touch of Gray, which blends rather than covers.

Semi permanent options like Schwarzkopf Live Men fade out gradually, so a hard root line never appears. Permanent kits from Bigen EZ and Cameleo Men cover fully but need touching up at the temples every three to four weeks.

Waves, curls and the British weather

Wave training needs three things: a brush, a durag and a moisturising pomade rather than a drying gel. SCurl 360 is the wave specific option here, and Cantu For Men Curl Activator Cream is the pick if your hair sits closer to curl than wave.

Summer humidity between 75 and 90% swells the hair and undoes a smooth side part by lunchtime, so lean on stronger hold through July and August. Winter heating near 30% humidity does the opposite and leaves hair and beard brittle, which is when a beard oil earns its keep.

Questions

Men's hair questions, answered

What is the difference between a clipper and a trimmer?
A clipper removes bulk and builds a fade, using guards to set the length. A trimmer sharpens edges, necklines and beard lines with a narrower blade. The WAHL Sure Cut kit gives you the clipper side; the beard trimmer set covers detail.
Which pomade is best for waves?
SCurl 360 Style Wave Control Pomade. It is made for wave training specifically, holds without drying the hair out, and works with the usual brush and durag routine rather than fighting against it.
Will men’s hair colour cover grey completely?
The permanent kits will. Bigen EZ and Cameleo Men both cover fully and need root touch ups every three to four weeks. If you want grey softened rather than gone, Just For Men Touch of Gray or a semi permanent suits better.
Does men’s dye work on a beard?
Only products sold for facial hair. The Creme Of Nature kit is made for hair, moustache and beard, and Bigen EZ lists beard use. Patch test 48 hours ahead and keep timings short, because facial skin reacts more than the scalp.
Is Cantu For Men only for Black hair?
It is built for curly and coily textures, which is the market it was made for, but it works on any curl that needs moisture and definition. Wavy hair may find it heavy, so use less and apply to damp hair.
Water based or oil based styling product?
Water based, such as Gabri Aqua Wax, washes out with normal shampoo and suits daily washing. Oil based pomades hold longer and shine more but need clarifying to shift. Pick by how often you wash rather than by finish alone.
How do I stop my beard feeling rough in winter?
Indoor heating drops humidity to about 30% and pulls moisture out of coarse beard hair. Wash the beard less often than your hair, and work a beard oil through while the skin underneath is still slightly damp.
Do I need a separate shampoo and body wash?
Not necessarily. Nivea Men Energy is a three in one for body, face and hair and is fine on short hair. If your hair is longer, curly or coloured, use a proper shampoo and keep the three in one for the gym bag.
What holds a quiff through a British summer?
A matte paste with real grip rather than a light cream. Got2b Phenomenal molding paste and the Dax Hair Shaper both cope with humid air. Apply to dry hair, because damp hair plus humidity is what makes styles drop.
Are the WAHL clippers loud?
Corded models run louder than cordless ones, and the professional fade clippers are the noisiest of the group. If you cut a child’s hair, a cordless trimmer is quieter and easier to handle on a moving head.
