Taliah Waajid for natural hair and locs

About the brand

Taliah Waajid started as a natural-hair stylist in Atlanta and built a product line around what she used on clients. The range is small compared with the big American brands, and it shows. There is very little overlap between products, and each one has a clear job.

It suits natural, textured hair that has never been relaxed, and it works particularly well on children's hair and on locs.

Black Earth and the herbal cleansers

Black Earth is the herbal side of the range. Total Body Black Earth Shampoo at 237ml is a gentle cleanser that can be used head to toe, and African Healing Oyl at 237ml is the oil that goes with it.

Two other cleansing options sit alongside. Berry Clean 3-in-1 Shampoo at 236ml washes, conditions and detangles in one pass, which helps on a child's hair or a rushed morning. Clean and Natural Herbal Hair Wash at 237ml is the more traditional wash for anyone who prefers a clean, uncoated feel.

The Great Detangler is worth understanding properly: it works as a leave-in conditioner and as a co-wash, so one 237ml bottle covers both jobs.

Shea-Coco and the curl products

Shea-Coco Curly Hair at 237ml is the definition cream, and Shea-Coco Condition Daily Leave-In at 237ml is the hydrating partner. Used together they cover most of a wash-and-go routine on curly and coily hair.

Curly Curl Cream handles frizz and definition on curly and coily patterns. Curl Sealer at 177ml is the finishing step that holds the shape once the cream is in. Easy Herbal Comb-Out at 236ml does what the name says, softening and adding slip before a comb goes near dense hair.

Locs, twists and protective styles

Lock It Up at 170g is the loc and twist product. Strong hold, no white residue, and it does not build a crust on a mature loc the way a hard gel can.

Protective Mist Bodifier at 237ml is a spray for hair about to go under a style, adding body and light hold before braiding or twisting. The 4oz Protective Styles oil covers scalp and roots under an install.

Children and seasonal notes

Two products are made specifically for children. Taliah Waajid for Children Soft and Curly at 177ml defines and softens, and the Vitamin-E Hair and Scalp Oil at 236ml is a lighter oil for younger scalps.

Through a British winter, when indoor humidity sits near 30 percent, the Shea-Coco pair and the comb-out do more than the lighter sprays. Across summer humidity of 75 to 90 percent, Curl Sealer and Lock It Up hold better than a cream on its own.

Questions

Taliah Waajid questions, answered

What is the Black Earth line?
The herbal side of the range. It covers Total Body Black Earth Shampoo at 237ml, African Healing Oyl and the Protective Mist Bodifier. The shampoo is gentle enough for skin as well as hair, which is where the name comes from.
Which Taliah Waajid cleanser should I choose?
Berry Clean 3-in-1 Shampoo for a quick wash that conditions and detangles at once. Clean and Natural Herbal Hair Wash for a plainer clean. Total Body Black Earth Shampoo if you want one bottle covering hair and body.
Is The Great Detangler a conditioner or a wash?
Both, which is unusual. It works as a leave-in conditioner on damp hair and as a co-wash in the shower. One 237ml bottle covers two steps, and it is the product most people in the range start with.
What works best on locs?
Lock It Up at 170g. It holds twists and locs firmly without leaving white residue or crusting on the surface, which is the main complaint people have about using a standard styling gel on mature locs.
Which products are made for children?
Taliah Waajid for Children Soft and Curly at 177ml softens and defines, and the Vitamin-E Hair and Scalp Oil at 236ml is a lighter oil for younger scalps. Both are gentler than the adult range and rinse out easily.
Curl Sealer or Curly Curl Cream?
Curly Curl Cream first, for moisture and definition. Curl Sealer after, to hold the shape and keep frizz down. They are designed to layer rather than to be chosen between, though the cream works alone for a softer finish.
Are these products heavy?
The Shea-Coco pair has real weight, which suits dense 4-type hair. If your hair is fine or low porosity, the Protective Mist Bodifier and Curl Sealer are lighter starting points that will not flatten the pattern.
Can I use the whole range together?
Yes, and it is designed that way. A typical routine runs Berry Clean or Herbal Hair Wash, then The Great Detangler, then Shea-Coco Condition Daily, then Shea-Coco Curly Hair, then Curl Sealer. Skip steps as your hair allows.
What should I use under braids?
Protective Mist Bodifier before the install for body and grip, then the Protective Styles oil on the scalp and roots afterwards. Both are light enough to use through a style without weighing the braids down.
How does the range handle British humidity?
Curl Sealer and Lock It Up hold through a damp summer better than the creams alone. Across winter, when indoor heating drops humidity to roughly 30 percent, the Shea-Coco products and the comb-out do more of the work.
What sizes do the products come in?
Most sit between 170g and 237ml, which is smaller than the big American brands. The upside is that a full routine takes up less shelf space. Each product page lists the exact size in millilitres and ounces.
Does Easy Herbal Comb-Out replace a conditioner?
No. It is a detangling and softening step for use before combing dense or matted hair, either on wash day or on a dry twist-out. Keep your conditioner in the routine and use the comb-out alongside it.
