Aunt Jackie's for thick, moisture-hungry hair

A range named for what it does

Aunt Jackie's is an American curl brand with plain speaking product names, which makes it easier to shop than most. Curl Boss, Frizz Patrol, Don't Shrink. The label tells you the job. The range is aimed at curly and coily hair, sits in the affordable bracket, and the textures are thick enough that a little goes a long way.

Definition: gels, jellies and puddings

Curl Boss coconut curling gelee is the everyday definer and the biggest seller. Ice Curls glossy curling jelly gives a firmer, shinier cast for wash and go styles. Flawless pattern perfecting pudding is creamier and better on looser curls that flatten under gel. If shrinkage is your issue rather than frizz, the flaxseed Don't Shrink elongating curling gel is the one built for stretch.

Frizz Patrol setting mousse works over any of them on a twist out or a rod set, and Slicked flexible styling glue handles sleek styles where you still want the hair to move.

Masques, and matching one to the problem

There are four masques and they are not interchangeable. Not Your Average is the protein one, for hair that feels mushy, over conditioned or heat damaged. Curl Spell is pure moisture, for hair that feels dry and rough. Magic Mend is the thermal repair option if you press or flat iron. Soothe Operator is the one for a dry, tight scalp.

Alternating a protein masque with a moisture masque is what makes the pair work. Using Not Your Average every week on hair that is already stiff makes things worse, and the same goes for using Curl Spell on hair that has gone limp.

Braids, twists and edges

Hold Tight braid and twist gel keeps a fresh install neat, and Ready, Set, Hold braid setting foam is what you spray before you dip the ends. Smooth and Swirl edge gel handles the hairline without the crunch you get from stronger edge controls. All three will flake if you layer them over a pass that has not dried, so give each one time.

Scalp oils, cleansers and day three

The Elixir oils come in three blends, collagen with tea tree, biotin with rosemary, and saw palmetto with grapeseed. They go on the scalp in sections rather than over the whole head. Cool It conditioner is the cooling one, useful after a long stretch in braids.

For washing, Lather Up is the gentle sulphate free shampoo, Power Wash is the clarifier for build up, and Coco Wash or the flaxseed Purify Me co wash cover the weeks in between. Wake Up refresher spray and Shine Boss sheen mist handle day three, when the curls have flattened on one side and a full wash is not due.

Questions

Aunt Jackie's questions, answered

Which Aunt Jackie's product should I start with?
Curl Boss coconut curling gelee for definition, with Transform hydrating leave in underneath it. That pair covers a wash and go for most curl patterns. Add a masque once you know whether your hair is asking for moisture or protein.
What is the difference between Curl Boss and Ice Curls?
Curl Boss is a softer gelee with a light cast and works on most curl types. Ice Curls is a firmer jelly with more shine and more hold, better for thick hair or humid days. Ice Curls needs scrunching out once the hair is fully dry.
How do I know if I need protein or moisture?
Stretch a wet strand. If it stretches a long way and stays limp, it needs protein, so use Not Your Average curl protein masque. If it snaps quickly and feels rough, it needs moisture, so use Curl Spell. Most people alternate between the two.
Is Aunt Jackie's good for low porosity hair?
Reasonably, if you apply to warm, wet hair and use less than the pot suggests. The lighter items, the leave in and Curl Boss, sit better than the masques. Low porosity hair coats easily, so clarify with Power Wash every few weeks.
Does the Don't Shrink gel really stretch curls?
It gives elongation when you apply it to soaking wet hair and then band, twist or stretch dry rather than air drying loose. On its own with no stretching method, the difference is small. The flaxseed base holds the length once dry.
Can I use the Elixir oils daily?
A few drops on the scalp in sections, two or three times a week, is enough for most people. Daily use leaves fine hair flat. Massage in with fingertips rather than nails, and keep it to the scalp rather than the length.
Which Aunt Jackie's shampoo do I need?
Lather Up sulphate free shampoo creme for regular washes, and Power Wash intense moisture clarifying shampoo once a month or when products stop absorbing. If you wash weekly and use gel, you will need the clarifier more often than you think.
Is Aunt Jackie's suitable for children?
The Girls Heads Up moisturising shampoo is made for children, and the Transform leave in is mild enough for most. Keep the gels off young scalps, use small amounts, and detangle with conditioner in the hair rather than on dry strands.
Why does my edge gel flake?
Almost always layering. Smooth and Swirl edge gel needs the first pass to dry before you add more, and it pills if you put it over an oil or a cream. Brush, tie with a scarf, wait ten minutes, then judge it.
How do I refresh curls without washing?
Mist with Wake Up refresher spray or plain water, smooth a small amount of leave in over the flattened sections, and reshape with your hands. Shine Boss sheen mist afterwards adds gloss. Piling on more gel is what causes build up by day four.
