It goes on after washing and stays in. The job is moisture and manageability: softening the hair while it is still damp so combing is easier and less of it snaps on the way through. Wavy hair from 2A through to looser 3B curls is the sweet spot, since the texture is light enough not to flatten a wave but still substantial enough to hold a curl together.
