It cleans and softens in the same pass, which is the part that matters when you have a limited window before someone loses patience. Hair comes out of the rinse with enough slip for a wide-tooth comb, so detangling is a two-minute job rather than a twenty-minute one.
Wet the hair thoroughly first. Apply at the scalp, massage with fingertips, then rinse and follow with a conditioner or leave-in while everything is still wet. Detangle before it dries, never after.

Application tips
Split the job into a few short steps rather than one long wash, because attention runs out fast.
Wet, apply, massage the scalp for thirty seconds, rinse. Keep the hair in two or four loose sections through the whole thing so it cannot tangle back on itself. Have the conditioner open and ready before you start.
Results
