Twelve ounces is a working size, so treat this as the tub for whole-head jobs. Dampen first, take a palmful, and distribute it row by row as you smooth, part or plait.
For a sleek pony, brush it back from the hairline and secure while the gel is still wet. Braids need to dry undisturbed before anything gets wrapped for the night.
