Clear gel with hydrolysed wheat protein in it, which is a more useful combination than it sounds. The protein helps curly and permed hair keep its own shape while the gel holds the style you have set, so the result looks like your hair rather than like a helmet.
It goes on colourless and dries without flaking, which is the main reason people keep a bottle of this specific gel around. Edges lay down flat and stay down. Moulded and sculpted looks keep their edge. Wet looks stay wet looking rather than turning grey and dusty an hour later.

Application tips
Damp hair, not wet. Take a small amount on the back of a comb for edges, or in the palms for a full mould, and work it in section by section while the hair still has give in it. Shape it, then leave it completely alone until dry.
Water on a brush the next morning brings the shape back, no rewash needed.
Results
Hold is firm and it stays put. Finger waves keep their edge, moulded shapes keep their line, and a laid hairline stays laid instead of lifting after two hours.
What it does not do is flake, which on dark hair is the main reason a gel gets thrown out. It dries invisible. Curly and permed textures keep their own bounce underneath rather than being flattened into a shell.
