If shampoo leaves your curls squeaky and stiff, a co-wash is the usual fix. This one cleans with conditioning agents instead of sulphates, so buildup comes off while the hair keeps the moisture it started with. Jamaican black castor oil and coconut oil sit in the base, and the target is curly and coily hair, 3b to 4c.

Keracare tested it against combing and buildup, and the numbers are worth knowing: 85.5 per cent of oil buildup removed, combing 37 per cent easier, detangling 36 per cent easier. Those figures match what most people report, which is that the hair feels clean rather than stripped, and the comb moves.

  • Washes without sulphates, so curl clumps survive the shower
  • Enough slip to detangle in the shower rather than after it
  • Sensible between full shampoo washes, or as the only cleanse for drier hair

The 355 ml bottle is a fair test run. Work it into the scalp with your fingertips rather than your nails, and rinse for longer than you would a shampoo, because a conditioning cleanser lingers.

Application tips

Wet the hair right through first, then apply in four sections, scalp before lengths. Fingertips in circles for a minute or two so the conditioning agents can lift what is sitting on the skin.

Now leave it in and detangle, ends first, moving upward with fingers or a wide tooth comb. Rinse once the comb runs clean. No second wash needed.

Results

Curl clumps leave the shower intact rather than blown apart, because nothing in the formula stripped them in the first place. Hair reads clean without the squeaking, stiff finish that sends you straight for a heavy mask.

Slip is the other half of it. A wide tooth passes through without a fight. On drier hair this can be the only cleanse you do; on oilier scalps it slots in between shampoos.
