Picking braiding hair by texture and length

What is in this collection

Two things sit side by side here: the hair, and the kit that makes a braid job work. On the hair side you will find pre-stretched braiding hair such as X Pression Lagos Braid, plus Cygnet Super Chunky Acrylic Yarn in black for yarn braids and faux locs. On the kit side there are crochet needles, latch hooks, twist combs, rubber bands and the gels and foams that hold everything in place.

If you braid for other people, most of what a working braider reaches for across a long install is in here.

Braid hair and yarn

Pre-stretched hair saves the wrist ache of dipping and stretching every pack by hand, and the tapered ends give a more natural finish. X Pression Lagos Braid arrives ready to use in full lengths.

Yarn is a different look entirely. Cygnet Super Chunky comes in 100g balls and works for yarn twists, Ghana braids and faux loc wraps. It weighs less on the scalp than the same volume of synthetic braid hair, and it does not need sealing in hot water.

Crochet tools and takedown

A crochet needle and a latch hook are not the same thing. The Jmail stainless steel crochet needle pulls hair through a cornrow base. The Murry Collection Dreadlock Crochet Hook Kit has finer hooks made for interlocking and tidying locs. The Magic Collection three piece crochet hook set covers general braiding.

For taking a style down, the Magic Collection Crochet Braid Remove Cutter beats scissors. The blade sits recessed, so it cuts the extension without catching your own hair.

Gels, foams and finishing

Shine 'n Jam Magic Fingers is the range most braiders know. The Extra Hold Styling Gel comes in 8oz and 16oz, the Setting Mousse is 12oz, Edge Magic handles the hairline and the Finish Sheen adds shine at the end without stickiness.

Alternatives worth knowing: Aunt Jackie's Hold Tight Braid and Twist Gel, Mielle Rice Water and Aloe Braid Gel, and Jamaican Mango and Lime Cool Scalp Braid, Twist and Loc Gel for anyone who finds a fresh install uncomfortably tight.

Keeping braids comfortable in a British climate

Summers here run between 75 and 90 percent humidity, which lifts frizz on synthetic hair and shortens how long a neat parting stays neat. A light sheen spray at the end of week two does more than piling extra gel on at the start.

Winter is the opposite problem. Indoor heating sits near 30 percent humidity and dries the scalp under a style you cannot easily wash. A nozzle scalp oil every few days and a satin bonnet at night make the difference between six comfortable weeks and three. For washing and sleeping, the Magic Collection Jumbo Plus Braid Shower Cap fits waist-length styles that a standard cap simply will not.

Questions

Braiding hair questions, answered

How many packs of braiding hair do I need?
For medium knotless braids to mid-back, most people use five to seven packs of pre-stretched hair. Jumbo braids need fewer, small braids need more. Buying one spare pack from the same batch avoids a colour mismatch later.
Do I need to stretch X Pression Lagos Braid myself?
No. It arrives pre-stretched with tapered ends, so you can pull straight from the pack and start. That saves a good hour on a full head compared with stretching standard braid hair by hand.
What is the difference between a crochet needle and a latch hook?
A crochet needle pulls hair through a cornrow with a simple hooked tip. A latch hook has a hinged bar that closes over the hook. The Murry Collection Dreadlock Crochet Hook Kit is finer again, and made for interlocking locs.
How do I stop white flaking on braids?
Use less gel, and let each section dry before adding more. Shine 'n Jam Magic Fingers Extra Hold Styling Gel dries clear, but any gel will flake if you layer it over a product that is still wet underneath.
Can I wash my braids?
Yes, and you should. Dilute shampoo in a bottle, apply along the partings, and rinse thoroughly. Every two to three weeks suits most installs. Drying fully matters more than the wash itself, especially through a damp British winter.
What can I use for faux locs?
Cygnet Super Chunky Acrylic Yarn in black wraps well and keeps the style light. Yarn locs sit softer than synthetic ones and need no hot water sealing. Yarn takes dye poorly, so buy the colour you actually want.
How do I take crochet braids out safely?
Use the Magic Collection Crochet Braid Remove Cutter. The blade is recessed, so it cuts the loop of the extension without reaching your own hair. Work slowly at the base and unpick rather than pull.
Will a normal shower cap fit long braids?
Rarely. The Magic Collection Jumbo Plus Braid Shower Cap is cut for waist-length and bulky styles, so the elastic sits at your hairline instead of halfway up the back of your head.
How long should I keep braids in?
Six to eight weeks is a sensible ceiling for most installs. Past that, new growth at the base puts tension on the roots and takedown gets messy. Locs and crochet styles follow their own timings.
What holds edges through a six week install?
Shine 'n Jam Magic Fingers Edge Magic is made for braiders and holds without the hairline going crispy. Reapply after each wash, and keep the amount small so it does not build up at the roots.
My scalp is sore after a fresh install. What helps?
Give it a day or two, then use a cooling product along the partings. Jamaican Mango and Lime Cool Scalp Braid, Twist and Loc Gel is made for that. Still sore after three days means the braids need loosening at the front.
Do braiders get better value on larger sizes?
The 16oz Shine 'n Jam Magic Fingers gel works out cheaper per use than the 8oz, and the 500 piece rubber band packs cost less per band. Worth it if you install more than a couple of heads a week.
