Sportin' Waves Maximum Hold does that. The hold is firm but still pliable, so a brush travels through it instead of skidding over the top, and it leaves a natural shine rather than a wet look. Nothing gritty gets left behind on the scalp, which is the failure mode of cheaper pomades.
Scoop a small amount, warm it between the palms, then work it through short hair and brush in your direction. Less is genuinely more with a maximum hold formula. Too much and the brush stops laying the hair properly.

Application tips
Waves are built by brushing, and the pomade is there to hold what the brush trains. Warm a fingertip of it, no more, until it turns from solid to slick, then work it over the hair rather than into the scalp.
Brush in the direction the pattern runs, a hundred strokes or so, then tie a durag down over it and repeat daily. Too much product in one go clogs the brush and flattens the pattern.
Results
The pattern holds its shape between brush sessions instead of dropping out by the afternoon, and the ridges keep a defined edge rather than blurring.
Shine sits at the natural end rather than looking wet, so it reads as groomed and not greasy. The hold is firm but still moves under a brush, which is the whole requirement here. On short cuts and tapers it lies down without leaving a visible film.
