Use it either way. In the shower it works as a rinse-out treatment for the lengths and ends. Out of the shower, a smaller amount left in on damp hair softens the curl and keeps it that way through the day. The formula is silicone-free, so nothing accumulates if you use it as a leave-in regularly.
