A firm hold gel is a blunt instrument, and that is exactly what some styles need. When you want a shape to stay where you left it through a long day, VO5 Firm Hold does the holding without the flaking or the sticky residue that puts people off gels in the first place.

It goes on wet, sets as it dries, and keeps sculpted, slicked or defined shapes in place. The finish has shine to it rather than a matte look, so hair reads polished rather than dry, and it washes out cleanly, which matters if you are using it daily. The 200 ml tube is the standard size.

It works across hair types, though the firmer the hold, the more it suits shorter cuts and defined styles. On textured hair it will hold a slick back or tidy edges. If you want movement left in, this is not the one to pick.

Application tips

Start with a blob the size of a five pence piece and add more only if the style asks for it. Too much gel is what causes white flakes later.

Damp hair takes it best. Rake it through with your fingers, comb the shape you want, and leave it alone while it dries. For a sharper finish, a hairdryer on low while the gel is still wet locks it faster.

Results

Firm sits in the middle of the VO5 gel range, under the mega hold version. It keeps a side parting, a quiff or a slicked back shape in place through a working day without turning the hair to plastic.

Movement is still there if you want it. The hold breaks down gradually rather than collapsing all at once, and it washes out with a normal shampoo.
