Petroleum jelly is a sealant rather than a moisturiser, and that distinction is what makes it useful. It goes on last, over damp hair or a freshly moisturised scalp, and holds what is already there in place.

Aliza blend theirs with cocoa butter, which softens the texture and brings conditioning of its own. It works across all hair types, though it makes most sense on curly and coily hair where moisture escapes fastest. Ends stay supple, frizz stays down, and the scalp feels more comfortable between wash days.

Use a small amount. Petroleum jelly goes a long way, and the usual mistake is applying it like a cream instead of as a thin seal over the ends and the parts.

368g / 12.98 oz, which at that rate of use will last a very long time.

Application tips

This is a sealant, so it goes on last and it goes on over moisture, never onto dry hair.

Damp the section with water or a leave-in first, scoop a fingertip, rub it between your palms until it turns clear, then smooth it down the length. Mid-lengths and ends only, unless the scalp is genuinely dry. On the scalp, part in rows and use a smear rather than a scoop.

Results

Hair stays soft for days rather than hours, because the film sitting on the outside of the strand slows how fast water leaves it. Dull lengths pick up a low sheen, and braids, twists or blow dried ends stop looking thirsty by day three. A little travels an unreasonable distance, so the 368g tub outlasts most of what sits beside it on the shelf.

Composition

Petroleum Jelly
Lays a film over the strand that slows moisture escaping from it
Cocoa Butter
Softens the feel of dry lengths and leaves a low sheen behind
