About 2B defined-wave hair
Type 2B is medium-density waves with a clearer S-pattern than 2A. The defined S-shape runs through the entire length, with frizz appearing at the crown but definition holding strong through the ends. 2B sits in the sweet spot between truly wavy and the loose end of curly — many 2B curlies are misdiagnosed as 2A (too loose) or 3A (too tight).
Identifying 2B hair
2B forms a clear S-shape that's visible when wet, holds through drying, and softens slightly when fully dry. Strand circumference matches a thin Sharpie marker (about 8mm). The waves bounce when you stretch and release them, but they don't form full ringlets.
Wet vs dry: 2B looks similar wet and dry, with maybe 5-10% loosening as gravity pulls. Compare with 2A (clearly straighter when wet) and 2C (tighter waves bordering on curls).
What 2B hair needs
Lightweight to mid-weight curl creams work well for 2B. Heavy curl creams designed for type 3-4 hair are typically too much, but you can tolerate slightly more product weight than 2A. Mousses, foams, gels and lightweight curl creams are all in the sweet spot.
Frizz at the crown is the most common 2B complaint. The fix: plopping with microfibre for 15-20 minutes after applying styler, then air-drying or diffusing on low heat. Don't touch the hair while it dries.
The 2B routine
Cleanse with a sulphate-free shampoo 2-3 times weekly. Apply rinse-out conditioner generously to mid-lengths and ends, leave 3-5 minutes, rinse. Apply leave-in conditioner to soaking-wet hair, follow with a lightweight curl cream or defining mousse. Scrunch up, plop, air-dry.
For UK-based 2B curlies, hard-water regions need clarifying every 3-4 weeks — mineral build-up progressively flattens the wave pattern. Use a clarifying sulphate-free shampoo monthly as a reset.
Sleep, refresh + day 2-3
Satin pillowcase or bonnet is non-negotiable for 2B — cotton creates friction frizz that takes hours to comb out. On day 2-3, mist hair with water and scrunch in a small amount of mousse or curl cream to revive the pattern.
All 2B products in this collection are screened for lightweight-to-mid-weight formulas, sulphate-free cleansing, and curl-friendly ingredient lists. Free UK delivery over £25, next-working-day before 2pm.
2B-specific styling techniques
Praying-hands application: Cup product between palms, smooth down each section of hair like you're praying. This distributes product evenly without disturbing wave clumps. Best technique for 2B because it doesn't over-define (which pushes wave into a curl pattern that doesn't suit 2B's natural shape).
Squish-to-condish: Cup conditioner in your palms with water, squish upward into wave sections while showering. Encourages defined wave clumps without combing them apart. Use during the rinse-out conditioner step before styling products go in.
Daily 2B refresh routine
Day 2: Spritz hair with water + a few drops of leave-in mixed in a spray bottle. Re-scrunch wave sections. Air-dry or quick low-heat diffuse. The Doux Mousse Def Jam or Bounce Curl Defining Hair Mousse for re-set hold if waves have collapsed.
Day 3+: Pineapple at night (loose high topknot in satin scrunchie), satin pillowcase. Morning: spritz crown, finger-twist any flat sections. Most 2B routines last 3-4 days max before refreshing wash needed.
