The mechanism is the same continuous fine mist as the larger bottles, so the spray lands evenly rather than in droplets. That matters more at this size than it sounds, because a compact bottle usually means a weak pump and a wet patch on one section of hair.
It refills through the top and takes water, diluted leave-in, toner, or anything you want to decant from a bottle too big to carry around with you.

Application tips
Rinse it out before the first fill. Unscrew the top, fill to just below the shoulder so the pump has air to work with, then screw it back down firmly.
Hold it eight to ten inches away and press in short bursts, moving across the head as you go. If the mist weakens, pull the nozzle off and run warm water through it, because product residue blocks the tube.
