One block, several grits. That is the whole idea behind the Fine Lines UK Nail File Block, and it is why it replaces the small pile of separate files and buffers most people end up with.

You work through the grits in order. The coarser side takes length off and sets the shape, the middle grades knock back ridges and rough patches, and the finest surface brings up a shine on bare nails. Done properly it leaves an edge that does not catch on fabric and a surface smooth enough for gel or ordinary polish to sit flat, which is most of what makes a home manicure look like a salon one.

One practical note. File in one direction rather than sawing back and forth across the edge. Sawing is what causes the peeling that most people end up blaming on their nails rather than on their technique, and a block with this many grades on it makes the slower method easy enough that you will stick to it.

It is a straightforward tool rather than a clever one, and it suits anyone doing their own nails at home as much as it suits someone working on other people's.

Application tips

File dry nails, never wet ones. Wet keratin tears rather than dusts, which is why nails filed straight out of the bath peel a week later. Hold the block flat against the free edge and take the corners in last, so the shape stays square rather than tapering. Rinse the block under the tap and stand it up to dry. Replace it when the coarse face stops biting.

Results

A finished edge you cannot feel. Nails come out shaped and level, with no snags to catch on tights or a jumper sleeve, and the buffed face carries a low shine on bare nails that looks deliberate.

Polish and gel go on flatter over a surface that has been smoothed, so the colour sits even and lasts longer before it starts chipping at the tips.

The full INCI is printed on the pack. We publish it here as soon as the brand supplies it, and we will read it off the bottle for you if you ask.
