Rice water was a home treatment long before it was a product, and fermenting it is the part that makes the difference. Fermentation breaks the starches down into inositol and amino acids small enough to reach inside the strand.

Safah's put that into an 8.5 oz mask made in the UK. What you notice is strength rather than softness: hair that resists a tug, holds a stretch, and stops leaving short broken pieces on your shoulders. The lustre comes second, from the same smoothing of the surface that makes hair reflect light instead of scattering it.

Rice water suits some hair better than others, and hair that is already protein-heavy can turn stiff on it. If yours is limp, over-conditioned or breaking easily, this is the direction to try. All hair types, fine through to coily.

Application tips

Shampoo first, squeeze the water out, then apply. A mask on soaking hair is a mask going down the drain.

Work it through in sections from the ends up, comb it through, and leave it fifteen to twenty minutes under a cap. Rinse until the hair squeaks. Once a fortnight is the right rhythm for most people; weekly is too often for hair that is already strong.

Results

The difference shows in how the hair behaves, not in how it feels in the shower. Strands hold their shape under tension, a ponytail stops shedding fragments, and a curl keeps its spring for longer.

There is a surface effect too: the cuticle lies flatter and the hair reflects light in one direction rather than scattering it. Follow with a moisturising conditioner if it feels stiff.

Composition

Fermented Rice Water
Fermented, so the useful parts are broken down fine enough to be absorbed
Inositol
Stays in the hair after rinsing and helps it resist snapping under tension
