A reconstructor is not a conditioner, and using it like one is the usual mistake. This is a protein treatment, and protein treatments are for hair that has gone weak and stretchy rather than hair that is simply dry.

The test is easy enough. Pull a wet strand. If it stretches a long way and does not spring back, the shaft has lost protein and needs rebuilding. That is the job here. It works into severely damaged, brittle strands and reinforces the internal structure, which brings elasticity back and cuts breakage and split ends at the same time.

Doo Gro make it in a 450g tub, which is a lot of product, and that suits how a reconstructor gets used: heavily, on the worst sections, then not again for a few weeks. Overdoing protein makes hair stiff, so alternate it with a moisturising mask rather than running the two together. Waves through to 3b curls.

There is a rhythm to it worth learning. Protein one week, moisture the next, and pay attention to how the hair feels rather than to the calendar. Hair that has gone stiff and snappy has had enough protein for now; hair that stretches and stays stretched has not had nearly enough.

Application tips

Clean hair takes protein better, so shampoo first and squeeze the water out. Coat the damaged sections thickly enough that they look white with product, and go lighter everywhere else.

Cover with a plastic cap and leave it for the time on the tub. Rinse thoroughly, then follow with a conditioner, because protein on its own leaves hair feeling tight.

Results

Weak, over-stretchy hair firms up. A wet strand that used to sag and stay stretched springs back instead, and the mid-length snapping that comes with that state drops off noticeably.

Ends look less see-through. The hair feels denser between the fingers, sometimes noticeably firm at first, which settles once moisture goes back in.
