Safah's Natural 100% Pure Tea Tree Essential Oil | Clarifying & Purifying for Skin, Scalp & Hair Care 15 ml/0.51 oz
Tea tree is the essential oil most people buy first, and the one most likely to be used wrongly. Neat, it is far too strong for a scalp.
Quality matters more here than with most oils, because the cheap versions are usually cut with something else. Steam distillation from the leaves, with no additives, fillers or artificial fragrance afterwards, is what you are paying for, and it shows in the strength of the smell when the bottle first opens.
Three or four drops in a tablespoon of carrier oil is a reasonable place to start, and you can build from there once you know how your scalp reacts.
- Dilute into a carrier oil for scalp use
- Add a few drops to a plain conditioner or shampoo
- Blend with peppermint or eucalyptus for a pre-wash oil
- Patch test on the inner arm before the first use
Keep the lid tight and the bottle out of direct sunlight and it will hold its strength.

Application tips
Make up a small batch rather than dosing every wash. A week's worth in a dark bottle saves you measuring on a Sunday morning and stops the neat oil being opened repeatedly.
Apply to the scalp in parted rows, not to the lengths, and give it twenty minutes rather than an hour; tea tree does its work early. Rinse with a clarifying shampoo if your scalp is oily to begin with.
Results
Sharp, clean and unmistakable. On a diluted scalp treatment it leaves the skin feeling cool and settled, and the tight, prickly feeling that builds under braids eases off.
The smell is strong in the bowl and much lighter on the head, gone within an hour of rinsing. Because it is undiluted in the bottle, one purchase covers a great many treatments.
Composition
