Petroleum jelly does one thing very well. It sits on top and stops water leaving, which makes this 12 oz tub a sealer rather than a moisturiser. Use it that way round, on damp skin or damp ends rather than dry ones, and it earns its place.
Blue Magic adds aloe vera and vitamin E to the base. The texture is soft enough to scoop with a finger and it warms quickly in the palm, which is the easiest way to get a thin, even layer instead of a lump.

On the scalp it is worth being deliberate. Petroleum jelly will not sink in, so it belongs along the partings in small amounts to stop moisture escaping, rather than raked through the roots. The same rule applies at the hairline before a press or a set, where a thin film keeps direct heat off the skin.
A little goes a long way, and too much on the hair will read as greasy for days. Fine for any texture as long as the amounts stay small.
