Mielle Hawaiian Ginger Styling Gel 12oz
The complaint about styling gels is the cast: hair that looks defined until you touch it and then crackles. This one leaves out alcohol and carbomer, so it dries soft and you can scrunch the hold out without losing the shape.
Glycerin and xanthan gum give the body, with ginger root oil, avocado oil, chamomile, bilberry, sugar cane, sugar maple, orange and lemon extracts. The 12oz bottle lasts, since the gel spreads easily on wet hair.

Apply to wet or dry hair and style as you want it. Mielle's own tip is to put the Mint Almond Oil on while the hair is still wet, which adds conditioning and cuts down flaking further. The gel is slippery going on, so let the hair dry fully before you judge the hold, since it firms up considerably on the way.
Hydration is the part most hold products skip, and it is the reason this one can be used on its own rather than layered over a cream. Made for type 2c through type 4b textures, and it carries the same citrus and ginger scent as the rest of the Hawaiian Ginger line.

Application tips
Work in quarters and do not be shy with it, since this spreads much further than a thicker gel. Rake through the section, smooth the outside of the clump, then leave the hair alone entirely. Expect it to feel far too slippery at first. Dry it fully, air or diffuser, before you form any opinion about the hold, because it tightens considerably on the way down.
Results
Definition without the shell. Curls set with real shape while the surface stays soft, so nothing cracks under a hand and no white dust appears at the roots as it dries.
The hair keeps some moisture rather than being sucked dry by the hold. Scrunching at the end loosens the finish without dropping the pattern you built.
