Tease at the root only, keep the top layer out of it, and comb the cushion out gently with a wide toothed comb before bed. Pulling a backcombed section apart in a hurry is where the breakage comes from.

Application tips
Dry hair holds a tease far better than damp hair, so this is a styling step rather than a wash day one. A light mist of hairspray or a dusting of powder at the roots gives the bristles something to grip.
Take a section about two fingers wide, hold it straight up, and work three or four short passes into the underside near the scalp. Move around the crown section by section, then lay the surface hair back over the top.
Results
Height at the crown that survives a full day, and a base underneath a ponytail or an updo that stops it collapsing flat against the head. Fine hair reads thicker because there is body holding the outer layer away from the scalp.
Because the packing sits underneath, the surface can still look smooth and brushed. What you notice is shape rather than texture, and it stays put until you take it down.
