Flat or curved is largely a matter of head shape and habit. A flat bed gives you a longer, more predictable contact strip on the top and back, and plenty of wavers prefer it for that alone. The curve only pays off around the sides, and if you are already angling the brush by instinct you may never notice the difference.

Application tips
Take the longest passes the flat bed allows, from the front hairline through to the nape in one movement, before you break the head down into smaller areas. Keep the face flush rather than riding the front row of bristles.
Twice daily, same order, then straight into a durag. If the scalp is sore the next morning, halve the session rather than dropping it.
Results
A flat bed gives a long, predictable strip of contact, which is why plenty of wavers stay with one even after trying a curved version. Over the top and the back it moves a lot of hair per stroke.
Firm, closely set bristles handle thick and coarse textures, and the handle keeps pressure steady all the way to the crown, where control usually slips.
