Medium is the setting most people should start on. Hard bristles move coarse hair and punish fine hair. Soft bristles finish beautifully and do very little on a dense head. Medium sits between the two and covers more heads than either.
The 7703CVD is a palm brush, so it sits in the hand with no handle, and the bristle bed is curved to follow the shape of the head. You get even contact from the crown down over the sides, which is where a flat brush starts skimming. On a wave pattern that is still forming, that even contact is what stops one side setting deeper than the other.
It suits most textures and most stages of a wave routine. If you are going to own one brush, this is a reasonable one to own.

Application tips
Take a full stroke from the crown down to the hairline in one movement instead of several short ones. Keep the palm flat so the bristles at the outer edge are loaded as heavily as the ones under your fingers.
Count your passes and give each quarter of the head the same number. Guessing is how one side ends up deeper than the other. Cover the hair while it is still lying flat.
Results
Medium bristles are firm enough to shift hair and forgiving enough to use daily, which is the combination most people actually need. They will not shred a fine texture and they will not skate over a dense one.
Even contact from the curved bed keeps both sides progressing at the same rate, so a pattern comes in balanced rather than needing correcting later.
