Protective styles hide the hair, they do not feed it. Six weeks in braids with nothing reaching the strand underneath and you take the style down to find the same dryness you started with, plus whatever broke off along the way. A leave-in you can actually get to the hair through a style is the fix.

Honey is a humectant, so it pulls moisture toward the strand and keeps it there. Coconut oil reduces protein loss during washing, shea butter conditions and settles the feel of a tight, dry scalp, and acai berry is in the blend for antioxidant support.

Where it fits in a protective style routine:

  • Before: on clean damp hair, so the braids go in on moisturised strands
  • During: applied to the exposed lengths and along the parts, a few times a week
  • After: on the take-down, to soften hair before you attempt to detangle it

It is a lotion rather than a cream, thin enough to get down a braid without sitting on top of it in a white streak, which is the failure mode of thicker leave-ins used on installed styles.

8 oz bottle, no rinsing, suited to type 2c through 3c. On denser textures, seal it with an oil or a butter afterwards or it will evaporate off faster than you would like.

Application tips

There are three moments worth using it. Ahead of the install, on clean damp hair, so nothing goes into the braid dry.

Mid-style, twice or three times a week, aimed at whatever hair is showing. And at take-down, before a comb goes anywhere near it. The consistency is closer to a lotion than a cream, so it travels down a braid instead of sitting on top.

Results

Hair under a style stays soft instead of coming out six weeks later exactly as dry as it went in. A lot of quiet damage happens during washing itself, and there is protection here against that. The scalp under a style stops feeling drawn, and take-down detangling gets considerably less destructive than it would otherwise be.
