Black seed oil has a strong, peppery smell and a dark colour, and both are signs you have the real thing rather than a diluted version. Aliza cold-press theirs from Nigella Sativa seeds into a 60ml bottle, which is small because you use it in drops rather than handfuls.

The composition is the interesting part. Essential fatty acids, vitamins, and thymoquinone, which is the compound black seed is known for. In cosmetic terms that gives you a rich conditioning oil that seals the cuticle and holds moisture in the strand.

That sealing action does most of the visible work. A closed cuticle reflects light, so shine improves, and it lies flatter, so frizz calms down. The strand also handles combing better, which means fewer broken ends over a month.

Two or three drops on the scalp and massage in, or a drop smoothed through damp ends after washing. It is potent enough that more is not better.

Works across all hair types, and particularly suits anyone whose scalp and lengths are both dry.

Application tips

Two or three drops is the dose, not a palmful.

For the scalp, part the hair in rows, drop the oil straight onto the parting and work it in with your fingertips for a minute. For the lengths, warm a single drop between your palms and press it through damp ends after washing. Leave it overnight or rinse at the next wash. Wash your hands after, since the colour transfers.

Results

The peppery smell fades within the hour. What stays is a strand that feels smoother under the fingers and a scalp that feels less tight.

Shine builds over a fortnight rather than overnight, because it comes from the cuticle settling flat. Combing gets easier alongside it, and easier combing is how you stop losing length at the ends.
