Fifteen ounces of leave-in cream is a lot, and it should be. A leave-in is the product you use most and ration least, especially on long or dense curls that need covering root to end every single time.

Coconut oil and baobab oil carry this one. Baobab is the less familiar of the two and the more interesting, a light oil that absorbs quickly, which keeps a rich cream from sitting on the surface. Coconut oil does the softening. Between them the hair ends up hydrated enough to stay flexible, and flexible hair is hair that does not snap when you handle it.

Rub a generous amount between your palms and smooth it through damp or dry hair from roots to ends. Do not rinse. Use it on its own as a daily moisturiser, or as the base layer under a gel or a curl cream on wash day. It suits type 2C through 4B.

The size is also what lets you use it as a detangler without feeling wasteful. Slather it on soaking hair, comb it through in sections, and let whatever stays behind keep doing its work through the day rather than rinsing it away.

Application tips

This is a base layer, so it goes on before anything with hold. Emulsify a generous scoop between the palms, then press it into damp hair section by section, smoothing down from root to end rather than working it in circles. Leave it in. Gel, custard or butter goes straight on top. On a dry day, a smaller amount through the ends alone keeps things going until the next wash.

Results

Rich rather than light, which is the point on hair that drinks everything and still feels rough by the evening. Coconut oil and baobab oil soften the strand right through, so a comb passes without dragging and fewer short pieces end up in the sink. Curls sit heavier and more defined, with a shine that lasts past the first day.
