Petroleum jelly does one thing extremely well: it sits on the surface and stops water leaving. That occlusive layer is why Vaseline Original has stayed in bathroom cabinets for over a century, and why it still outperforms far fancier products on genuinely chapped skin.

The formula is triple purified petrolatum, which is to say it is not trying to be clever. On dry lips, cracked heels, elbows or wind bitten cheeks it forms a barrier that keeps moisture in and cold air out.
